Peggy Ann (Beck) Wood, 80 of Jonesboro, passed from this world to her heavenly home on June 27, 2020 at Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House.
She was born February 16, 1940 at St. Bernard's Hospital to Herbert and Helen (Wyatt) Beck. Most of her life was spent in Arkansas in the towns of Bono, Black Rock, and Jonesboro.
Peggy was a 1958 Graduate of Jonesboro High School and a 1961 Graduate of Arkansas State College where she earned a degree in Business. She met the love of her life, Bob Wood, at a dance class while they were in college. They married on August 27, 1961, at Fisher Street United Methodist Church and enjoyed a blessed 53 years of married life. Following the wedding they made their home in Kirkwood, Missouri.
In 1977 Peggy, Bob and their girls moved back to Jonesboro and started a homebuilding and real estate business. In addition to working in the family business, Peggy worked for Congressman Bill Alexander in his office for 12 years as District Representative.
Peggy and Bob loved the Lord, and were members of First United Methodist Church. Peggy sang in the Chancel Choir, taught preschool Sunday School and served as pianist for the Christian Edition youth choir. She also helped with the Communion Rail Needlework project committee and created one of the panels. Indeed, needlework and sewing were among her favorite hobbies and she created many beautiful projects and clothing for her daughters and grandchildren.
Beta Sigma Phi sorority was important to Peggy. She was a member for over 50 years. She initiated in 1967 into Zeta Kappa Chapter in Kirkwood, Missouri. She served as President, Corresponding Secretary, and was awarded Girl of the Year in 1971. In 1977 she transferred to the Laureate Iota Chapter in Jonesboro and later the Jonesboro Preceptor Kappa Chapter. She served as President, Vice-President and Treasurer. One of her favorite activities was hosting the annual Christmas tea in her home. In 1983 she received Order of the Rose which is awarded to members of 15 years who have gone above and beyond in their service. She also received the highest degree of Torchbearer 2014.
Altrusa of Jonesboro was another favorite organization of Peggy's. She joined in 1988 and was a member for over 30 years. During that time she served as President, Corresponding Secretary, Community Service Chair, District Eight Secretary, District Community Service Officer, By-Laws/Archives Chair and Newsletter Chair. Her most cherished projects were ones that helped the community with literacy and leadership. One of these was the Altrusa chapter's sponsorship of the Jonesboro GED graduation ceremony. She achieved the honor of Emeritus Status in 2018.
Peggy leaves to cherish her loving memory, daughters, Lisa (Wood) Ammerman and husband, Mark, of Houston, Texas and Jill (Wood) Morris of Jonesboro; five grandchildren, Lauren Ammerman, Meredith (Ammerman) Blackburn and husband, Grayson, Nathan Ammerman, Wyatt Morris and Jordon Morris; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Peggy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, and brother, William Eugene (Gene) Beck.
Funeral service will be at First United Methodist Church, Thursday, July 2, 2020 at 11:00 am with Rev. John Miles officiating. Burial will follow at Trinity Cemetery, Bono.
Honored to serve as pallbearers are Mark Ammerman, Nathan Ammerman, Wyatt Morris, Tom Beck, Brandon Beck and Grayson Blackburn.
Visitation will be from 10:00 am until time of service.
The family would like to thank the dedicated caregivers from Jonesboro Health and Rehabilitation and Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House for their loving care.
If desired, family and friends may make memorial contributions to Jonesboro's, First United Methodist Church, Jonesboro Church Health Clinic, or the Jonesboro Altrusa Chapter.
Funeral services are under the direction of Roller-Farmers Union Funeral Home.
