Charles A. "Bill" Buchanan, 79, of Batesville died Sunday at his residence.
He was born May 22, 1933 in Sitka, Arkansas and was the son of Marshal B. Buchanan and Minnie Faye Causbie Buchanan.
He served in the US Army during the Korean War.
He graduated from Arkansas State University in Jonesboro and worked there as the beef herdsman. During his career, he served as the agriculture instructor at Hoxie High School; the Lawrence County FmHA assistant county supervisor, and was promoted to supervisor. While serving as supervisor, he received the Supervisor of the Year award for the largest work load of any county in the United States. He was awarded the Special Services award given by the President and Secretary of Agriculture, Earl Butz in Washington D. C. He then became the FmHA district director with offices located in Batesville.
Bill enjoyed horseback riding and working with cattle, gardening, hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Maxine Guthrie Buchanan of Batesville; two daughters, Katherine June Mayberry of Floresville, Texas and Sue Lavon Squire of Lawrenceville, Georgia; five grandchildren, Bradley Squire, Kara Linnea Squire, Trevor Marshall Squire, Dallin Taylor Squire, and Courtney Buchanan Mayberry; brother, Bruce Buchanan of Clifty, Arkansas; sisters, Barbara Buchanan Haynes of DeRidder, Louisiana and Gena Buchanan Hill of Highland, Arkansas and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Linda Diane Buchanan; and two brothers, Douglas "Mack" Buchanan and John Marshall Buchanan.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, May 18, 2013 at the Roller-Crouch Funeral Home Chapel with Larry Cruse and Dennis Squire officiating.
Burial will be at Buchanan Cemetery in Sitka, Arkansas at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, under the direction of Roller-Crouch Funeral Home of Batesville.
Pallbearers will be Van Thomas, Zack Weller, Fred Engelken, Danny Kopp, Robert Engelken, Ricky Carter, Steve Schmidt and Greg Kemper.
Honorary pallbearers are Kenneth Nash and Carl Baird.
Visitation is from 5:00-8:00 p.m., Friday, May 17, 2013 at the funeral home.
