Atalee Conyers Pounders, 99, of Sidney, Arkansas died Tuesday, December 7, 2010.
She was born to Nathaniel Evans Conyers and Mattie Pearson Conyers at Mount Pleasant, Arkansas, December 20, 1910. After her father's death in 1916, she moved with her mother and four brothers to Sidney. This was home to her for the rest of her life.
She was married to Robert Cecil Pounders, November 5, 1936.
Atalee taught school in White and Sharp Counties before joining her husband in banking in 1941. She continued in the banking profession until 1981 when she retired to private life.
When but a child, she joined the Methodist Church and was a faithful member until her death. She was very active in church and community projects. She was a member of the Extension Homemakers Clubs, and served this organization at the county level as both President and Devotional Leader. She was a member of AARP and Sidney Senior Citizens, where she enjoyed quilting and other activities. She enjoyed reading and had a special love for poetry; she could recite many poems by memory. Atalee enjoyed working with flowers and feeding the birds.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one step-daughter, Marie Pounders Brewer; and four brothers, Pearson Conyers, Lloyd Conyers, Manuel Conyers, and David Conyers.
She is survived by one step-granddaughter, Mrs. David Barber of Nashville, Arkansas; one great-grandson, Dr. Thomas Barber of Austin, Arkansas; three great-great-grandsons, also of Austin; two nieces, Leann Lindsey of Phoenix, Arizona and Annalee Williams of Indianapolis, Indiana; and four great-nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, December 10, 2010 at Sidney United Methodist and Cumberland Presbyterian Church officiated by Rev. Doyle Berckefeldt and Rev. Rob Ernest.
Interment will be at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Sidney under the direction of Roller-Crouch-McGee Funeral Home of Cave City.
Pallbearers are David Barber, Thomas Barber, Rodney Downing, Stephen Lindsey, Kenneth Bachelor, and Kendrich Davis.
The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 pm Thursday, December 9, 2010 at the funeral home.
