I've known and worked with people from all over the world... Rarely, have I run across someone like Gary, let alone, had the privilege to call him a friend. Gary had that unique, God-given quality which drew people to him. You just HAD TO like him.. The smile, the personality... Like everyone else, I grew to really love being around him. We spent most of our time together as teenagers. He and Kevin Minyard would come and play music with me and Johnny McCoy.., Man, did Gary love to beat those drums! Then, Gary and I spent time together as friends. I remember, the absolute BEST ham sandwich I ever had was at his house! His dad, Don, was a meat cutter at the time, and Gary pulled out some wrapped ham from the fridge. They were really ham steaks... And he slathered white bread with real mayonnaise ( I had only had Miracle Whip before)... Slapped that ham on there, and I was in heaven!!! I remember going camping with him and his family and his mom serving turkey legs.. So good! I also remember him teaching me licks on the piano that his Uncle Tommy had taught him and thinking... Wow, this is the coolest family ever! I know Gary had struggles in life, but the fact is.., We all do. You see, Gary lived on the surface... No pretense... He lived "out loud", where as many of us hide what we are going through. That's what made him so special, so bright and so unforgettable. I saw him a few years ago in Little Rock during a chance meeting, and hugged him for the last time. The years had etched their marks upon each of us, but still, there was that light inside of him that set him apart. What a wonderful family he was blessed with... Don, Lynda, Greg... His wife, children and grandchildren. The McClellan family and the entire France family which has changed the lives of so many, for good, for generations. I pray God bless you all, and bring comfort to you all, as your son and our beloved friend goes home.
