Ella Katherine Pierce

of Jonesboro, AR

March 24, 1924 - February 27, 2015

Ella Katherine Pierce passed away Friday, February 27, 2015 at the Flo and Phil Hospice House. She was born March 24, 1924 to Wesley Parker and Doris Knox Parker in Cudahy, California.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, John and her husband, Howard Christie Pierce.

She is survived by two daughters, Mary Pierce of Jonesboro and Gilda Pierce of Little Rock; two granddaughters, Jamie King and her husband Lonnie and Elaine King and her husband Josh. Ella had six great-grandchildren, Lilly (12), Carley (7), Claira (6), Solomon (6), Georgia (2) and Henry (1). She is also survived by four nieces, Sandra Buckner, Laura Parker, Nina Parker and Sherry Shrock all of Sacramento, California.

Ella was a retired teacher of the Jonesboro Public School system where she taught in both the regular and special education classrooms for many years.

Ella was a former Master Gardener and a lifelong lover of all that grows. She participated in many Audubon Society Annual Bird counts with her good friend Betty Jeanne Wheatley.

Ella was a veteran of WWII having served in the Women's Army Corp.

Throughout her entire adult life, Ella has been a loyal blood donor to the American Red Cross. She has been honored by the Red Cross for numerous contributions of both blood and platelets. Ella felt strongly about providing this service, perhaps because she had the type of blood which is considered ''the universal donor''. Her family invites you to make a blood or platelet donation in her honor or a monetary contribution.

At her request no services are planned.

Memorials can be made to Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House, 1138 East Matthews Avenue, Jonesboro 72401.

Mary,,
Your mother was my favorite teacher in the fourth grade & I loved her so much. If you never heard the story about the question that I asked her during that time, I will share it with you someday. She was such a loving & caring lady & she will always be in my heart. I bought a crocheted star from her once & still have it which I will treasure. I never knew that she served our country but I can certainly see how fortunate they were to have your mom. I am so sorry for you & your family & you will be in my prayers. The David Puryear Ctr is where my special needs half brother lives & I will be making a donation to them in her honor since she taught & understood special needs people.

Gilda and family,
I just wanted to let you know what a special Mother you all had. I worked as her aide for 4 years at Hillcrest when she taught special ed. She was so very good with these children. She taught me so much in how to work with special needs children. I will always treasure the days and moments I knew her. It was a delight to read that she had served in a branch for our country. This is something that I had not known about her. May you all find comfort in knowing she was one special lady and that she is now made complete in our LORD.
Fondly
Dinah

I taught for many years with Ella at Hillcrest. What a wonderful teacher she was. She had such a pure heart. She was a tower of strength (even literally!), but a gentle spirit. She didn't have an ego that required patient listeners, but when she spoke it was with intelligence and common sense worth hearing. After retirement I enjoyed her concise and interesting letters to the Jonesboro Sun. I know you are grieving for your loss, but know that many of us will remember her.
