George David Tipps

of Searcy, AR

July 7, 1924 - February 27, 2015

George D. Tipps, Jr. of Searcy died on Friday, February 27, in Searcy. He was 90.
Tipps was born in Childress, Texas on July 7, 1924 to George D. and Flossie Billingsley Tipps and was reared in the family's heritage in Churches of Christ. He preached his first sermon at age 13 and was ordained to ministry by the elders of his home church at age 17.
He began his preaching career while a student at Harding College, where he graduated in 1945. He later attended seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. In his 70 years of preaching, he served church congregations in Arkansas, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, and the District of Columbia. In addition, he preached in revival meetings throughout America and in several foreign nations. He also led singing in gospel campaigns and appeared in numerous Herald of Truth television programs during the 1960's.
The majority of Tipps's preaching career was spent in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. He served on the Board of Directors of the Rotary Club of Dallas. His passion for Christian education motivated him to serve as Chairman of the Board of Fort Worth Christian School and College. Later he served as board chair for the Associated Christian Living retirement center in Fort Worth. He also was involved in the establishment of Lakewood Village, a Christian retirement facility.
Tipps was a founding member of the President's Council of Harding University and served on the council for more than a quarter of a century. In 1989 he received Harding's Distinguished Alumnus award.
He taught adjunct courses for four Christian colleges and appeared on numerous lectureship programs. He especially enjoyed his association with British Bible School.
Upon his enrollment in Harding College in the early 1940's, Tipps became a member of College Church. The church then met in the auditorium of Godden Hall-the same building where his dorm room was located. Upon his return to Searcy in 1994, Tipps renewed his association with College Church. He also preached by appointment in various local congregations.
Tipps was preceded in death by Claire Camp Tipps, his wife of 54 years. To this union were born three children: Sheri Shearin (Arthur) of Searcy; Beverly Hennen of Carson City, Nevada; and David Tipps (MaryAlice) of Columbia, South Carolina.
He leaves seven grandchildren--Marcus Mayhall, Scott Shearin (Mikki), Matthew Mayhall, Daniel Tipps (Jackie), Elizabeth Shearin Thomason (Daniel), Derrick Tipps, and Michael Mayhall-and eight great-grandchildren-Jordan, Keaton, Cameron, Mariya, and Aidan Shearin; Jenna Tipps; and Seth and Finn Thomason.
Tipps also was preceded in death by his second wife-Edna Doney Tipps of Shelbyville, Tennessee.
He married June Harkless Tipps in May of 2003. Due to reasons of health, she resides in west Little Rock in order to be cared for by her family.
He also is survived by his brother Joe Tipps and wife Helen of Geneva, New York.
The family expresses appreciation to the staff and residents of Harding Place for their care and concern for George in his final days. Special thanks go to Harding Place administrators Randy and Sandy Reynolds. The family also is deeply grateful to Dr. Michael Justus for his professional and personal service as Tipps's primary physician. Finally, we extend thanks to the staffs of Unity Health, Arkansas Hospice and Amedisys Home Health for their service during his final days.
The family visitation is scheduled for Sunday afternoon from 1:00 to 2:30 in the College Church of Christ family room.
The funeral service is scheduled for the College Church auditorium on Sunday afternoon at 3:00, with interment to follow at Oak Grove Cemetery.
Memorial gifts may be directed to Harding University Abundant Living, HU 12280, Searcy, AR 72149; and/or College Church Great Commission Sunday , 712 E. Race, Searcy, AR 72143.

Too a wonderful man and preacher, You were a kind loving person, who preached the word form your heart, with love and kindness. My daughter use to call you her Jesus, she was only 4, and it was her way of saying, you were kind and loving like Jesus. You and Clair, will be missed. Mom and Dad were very fond of you also(Mary Ann and Melvin Rogers).

Although I didn't work directly with Mr. Tipps, I did enjoy seeing and talking with him when I was working at Harding Place; he always had a smile for me. He will definitely be missed.
