Howard ''Ed'' Farmer, 79, of Batesville died Friday, February 20, 2015, at a local nursing home.

Born October 12, 1935, in Ash Flat, Arkansas, he was the son of Sam Farmer and Mary Watson Farmer.

Ed was a veteran of the U.S. Marines. His extensive career included serving as a deputy sheriff in Modesto, California and working as a chef at Hope College in Holland, Michigan. He also owned and operated several gas stations in California; worked on oil rigs in the Louisiana Gulf; owned and operated a tractor-trailer; and owned Beach Street Bar and Grill in Newport, Arkansas before retiring.

He was humorous, strong-willed, caring, patriotic and a staunch republican. He loved his family and was known to answer the telephone, "hello darlin'."

He is survived by his wife, Jean A. Farmer of Batesville; four sons, Robert Farmer and his wife, Pam, of Owens, Kentucky, Chuck Farmer and his wife, Laurie, of San Antonio, Texas, Richard ''Doc'' Farmer and his wife, Marsha, of Abington, Virginia; and Steven Farmer and his wife, Jamie, of Blythe, Georgia; two daughters, Marsha Mathewson and her husband, Art, of Cave City, Arkansas and Edna Farmer of Modesto, California; three brothers, Eugene Farmer of California, Rayburn Farmer and his wife, Sheila, of North Carolina and Robert ''Bob'' Farmer and his wife, Brenda, of Florida; three sisters, Wyveda Wilson of Batesville, Barbara ''Dolly'' Wilkinson of California and Marilyn ''Sue'' Roux of Batesville; sixteen grandchildren; several great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Sam Farmer, Johnny Farmer, Bill Farmer, James Farmer and Richard Farmer; and a sister, Kathryn Simpson.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Arrangements are by Roller-Crouch Funeral Home of Batesville.
