of Hyampom, CA
September 12, 1939 - February 6, 2015
Joe P. Mooney, of Hyampom, CA, died Friday, February 6, 2015, at MD Anderson Cancer Clinic in Houston, TX. He was 75. Born in Fallsville, Arkansas, September 12, 1939, he attended school in Oark, AR and then the College of the Ozarks on a basketball scholarship. As a young man he moved to Trinity County, California, to work in the lumber industry. Joe was a sawyer for many years at the Hyampom Lumber Company and after retirement contracted construction work and ran his own mobile saw mill.
Joe was a strong man with a great love of the outdoors, family, community, tradition, old Country Western music, baseball, good pie, and practical jokes. He enjoyed being the auctioneer for the Hyampom Pie Auction for several years. He was tender with his grandchildren and took his life in his hands more than once teaching some of them to drive. He could often be found helping the young grandkids spread feed for the turkeys or picking wild blackberries on the homestead. He had a generous heart and was perceptive of the needs of others. He could be counted on to notice when someone needed a meal, or a load of firewood. Joe will be remembered for his laugh, his great love for his wife, Carol, and the lessons he taught us all about taking joy in the simple things.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Mooney of Hyampom; daughters, Marita Mooney and Denice Luck of Redding CA; two step-sons, Ross and Erika Bennett of Anchorage, AK and Dan and Alice Bennett of Colorado Springs, CO. Two grandsons, David Joseph and Amie Swaney of New Bern, NC and Dell and April Bennett of Santa Fe, TX; and five granddaughters, Ashley, Emily, and Keena Bennett of Anchorage, AK; Lucia and Jake Capraro of Las Cruces, NM; and Rose Bennett of Colorado Springs, CO; nieces, Sonda and Bill Cook of Broken Arrow OK; Brenda and Joey Eveld of Charleston, AR; Tracy Mooney of Newton Co., AR; and nephew, Stanton and Terrie Brown of Russellville, AR . Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Lynn and Erna Mooney, as well as seven siblings.
Services will be held February 14, 2015, 10 am at the Free Holiness Church in Salus, AR, with Pastor Robert Boen officiating. Burial will follow at the Case cemetery with Ross Bennett, Dan Bennett, Dell Bennett, David Swaney, Jake Capraro, and Dell Montgomery serving as Pallbearers; and Dave Wroe will serve as honorary Pallbearer.

I lived in Hyampom in the 70's and worked with Joe and visited his home for some nice parties.
He was always fun to be around, I wish the best for his family.
