John Joseph Lane

of Subiaco, AR

February 14, 1966 - November 12, 2014

John Joseph Lane, 48, of Subiaco, Arkansas died Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at his home. He was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on February 14, 1966 to James Ronald and Joyce Irene (Feiereisen) Lane. John attended Elementary, Middle, and High Schools in Mt. Vernon, Iowa. John furthered his education by gaining an Associate's of Science at Iowa Lakes Community College, Estherville, Iowa, a Bachelor's of Science in Fish and Wildlife Management at Arkansas Tech University, Russellville, Arkansas and a Master's of Science in Biology (Waterfowl Ecology) at Tennessee Technological University, Cookeville, Tennessee.

A Memorial Service is being held at the family farm on Tuesday, November 18, at 2:00 pm under the direction of Roller Funeral Home, Paris, Arkansas. All family and friends are invited and appreciated. In lieu of flowers please donate to a conservation organization of your choice.

John was preceded in death by his grandparent's George and Eladel Lane of Mt. Vernon, Iowa, and John and Fran Feiereisen of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. A golden soul now at peace, John leaves behind his earthly survivors; wife Donna Marie Hertlein, daughter Claire Marie and son Nova John Hertlein Lane. His parent's Jim and Joyce (Feiereisen) Lane of Mt. Vernon, Iowa; sister Jennifer Lane of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; sister Jessica and husband John Robinson with their sons Jarrett, Jace, Jentry, and Jesson of West Des Moines, Iowa; many cousins, family members, and friends.

John spent his childhood roaming the fields, streams and neighborhoods surrounding his families' home in Iowa. John was always, and to the end, a lover of the outdoors. As a boy, he ran a trap line with his trusty dog, Annie, at his side, braving the freezing winters of Iowa. He gained the love of the outdoors from his family who wholeheartedly supported his hunting, fishing, and educational endeavors concerning natural resources. He spent countless hours hunting waterfowl and pheasants in Iowa especially at Muskrat Slough and during his time in Estherville.

John chose to further his education at ATU-Russellville because it was the only university in the Mississippi Flyway which offered a program of study specifically for Fish and Wildlife Management. He then obtained his Master's of Science under the direction of Dr. Dan Combs at TTU-Cookeville

John worked on many natural resource projects, from Louisiana to Canada to Alaska for such agencies as the USACE Waterways Experiment Station, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Delta Waterfowl Research Station, and The Nature Conservancy. During his time at ATU-Russellville John met Donna and the journey began. He also continued his pursuit of all things outdoors: hunting, fishing, climbing, canoeing, camping and hiking. John and Donna have a multitude of friends from our college days and our life together who are loved beyond measure.

He then was employed by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission as Assistant Regional Supervisor for southwest Arkansas. John was instrumental in restoration efforts at Grandview Prairie WMA. He left the AGFC to become employed by the US Forest Service in Cleveland Tennessee, then on the Ocoee Ranger District specifically working on wildlife management, conservation education, and recreation programs.

John returned with his family to Arkansas in 2009 to establish the family farm. He remained an employee with the US Forest Service serving as Recreation Program Manager for the Boston Mountain and Mt. Magazine Ranger Districts until his death. He implemented crucial district-wide recreation plans and advanced partnerships which improved recreation programs on the District.

John and Donna spent nearly 27 years following our dreams, loving each other as only we understood, and doing our best to ''paddle effectively as a team.'' John introduced his children to the great outdoors. Claire loves ducks! Nova loves fish! John was on his way to becoming a full-fledged farmer. He taught his children the valuable lessons of caring for the Earth, respect for all living things, gratitude for the blessings bestowed upon them, tolerance and reason. Simply, John was a wonderful son, incredible soul mate, friend, and fantastic ''Papa''.

Oh, the stories he could tell! Rejoice in his life and Wish him well on his journey.

Donna, Kwon (Michael Kelley) an old College Friend from time I spent at Estherville Iowa just told me moments ago.
I don't know what to say. I am praying... for You and Claire and Nova, & Your whole families (Including pets).
I feel so blessed to have known John, & honored to be friends with Him (I know He would humbly feel that's saying it too strongly, such a gracious soul).
John so happily told me of his wonderful Wife and Children, in a phone conversation a couple years ago.
I am without words, but sure feel blessed to have been a part of John Lane's world.
God Bless You and Claire & Nova, Donna.

Claire and Nova, I really enjoyed meeting you for the first time last summer. I know the loss of your father is a bit painful and hard to understand. He was a wonderful man in so many ways, and I hope you can always remember what you liked most about him and the things you did together. In life we lose people we love from time to time and it's always hard, but as time passes it's important to honor a lost loved-one by doing the best you possibly can with your own life. I'm sure that's what John would have been hoping for. Lots of love to both of you. Great-uncle Greg

Really sorry to hear about John's passing. I knew he was a good guy when i first met he and Donna at canoe school on the mulberry river years ago. It was nice to hear of all their family had done and how well they were 'paddling effectively as a team." I'm glad i got the opportunity to know you a bit.

My heart breaks when hearing this unbelievable news. Claire is a wonderful, beautiful girl who loves her father like no other. John loved his children more than anything, family was very important to him. For John to leave his family this way is so unnatural of this brave strong man I knew a short time at Tech and then again here in Paris. Many prayers will be sent for they family. May God watch over your family on a daily basis and help easy the pain. You will be greatly missed John Lane!!!

I, like my sister, am at a loss as to why my big strong brother would feel like he had no other remedy for his anguish then to do this. I am forever heartbroken and saddened by this. I know that I am not the only one who was honored in calling John a friend. Those who worked with him knew the passion he had for the outdoors and for his children. I have always been jealous that he knew what he wanted to do with his life and went out and did it. I could never decide. We will always remember with joy the times we were able to spend with John and will cling to those memories with fierce contemplation. John, save a seat on the couch for me next to you, so I can feel your strong arms around me once again. All my love and faith are with you!! I LOVE YOU!

John was my oldest cousin on either side of the family. He was two years older, so I always looked up to him and learned a lot from him about what was coming up in school. I loved dropping by and watching his pet chameleon, or playing with his train set, or playing football or baseball with him. As an adult he was just about the warmest, most genuine person I could think of, capable of deep and sincere reactions to anything. I'm really sorry that my wonderful aunt and uncle Joyce & Jim have to go through this. It struck most of us completely from out of the blue. Rest in peace, our honored cousin.

Although I knew John the least of the Lane siblings, I know the love they had for each other (they could spat but I know they always made up!). I know his loving parents. My heart is aching for what you are experiencing right now and I hope you know that we all are with you in support of your grief. I also envision memories stirred by sifting through the pictures, recalling the stories behind them, laughing and crying. May these cherished memories help ease the burden you carry as your go forward. Love and warm hugs to you all!

I will never truly understand why my big, strong, wise, loving and thoughtful brother would of chosen to end his life and to leave his two beautiful children without a father. Many people loved him and admired him. Our family will be lost without him, but we will move on. However, his children will never fully understand what a wonderfully beautiful person their father was. My only solace is that I know that our Grandparents were in Heaven waiting for him especially Grandpa John and that he is no longer in pain. May God wrap His loving and comforting arms around his wife and his children and my family. Rest in peace my big brother till one day we meet again. Love you!
