Drury Davis Adams

of Batesville, AR

July 7, 1937 - October 14, 2014

Drury was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, July 7, 1937, to Judge Drury D. Adams and Ansel Livingston Adams. He was raised in Batesville and he died October 14, 2014, at his home.

He is survived by his sister, Ann Adams Rhodes and husband Paul of Batesville; niece, Ansel Rhodes Ponder and husband Drew of Batesville. He is also survived by his caregiver of nine years, Judy Frolos.

Drury was a valued member of the Progressive Sunday School Class at the First United Methodist Church. He walked to church every Sunday, weather permitting, until he was no longer physically able.

Drury considered everyone a friend. Drury was known to frequent many businesses on his daily route. He would stop at police dispatch, the fire department, the Citizens Bank, Worthern Bank, Roller-Crouch Funeral Home, the post office and Nu-Way Cleaners. Drury was lovingly known as the ''walking man'' and the ''man who asked many questions.'' He most likely knew your phone number and address!

Drury was awarded a key to the City of Batesville by Mayor Rick Elumbaugh on November 22, 2011. This date was also declared Drury Adams Day in Independence County by Judge Robert Griffin.

Drury went to school in Batesville, Devereux in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Brown in Houston, Texas.

Honorary pallbearers are Preston Grace, Butch Ketz, Dr. Bob Slaughter, Dr. Bradley Slaughter, Dr. Doug Bernard, Mickey Powell, Dr. Bill Beller, Dr. Chris Beller, Ken and Ina Bolton, Stanley and Janette Wood, Kenny Gerhardt and the Progressive Sunday School Class.

Services are at 2:00 p.m., Friday, October 17, 2014, at the First United Methodist Church in Batesville with Reverend Justin Ledbetter and The Reverend John Drymon officiating.

Burial will be at Oaklawn Cemetery under the direction of Roller-Crouch Funeral Home of Batesville.

Following the burial there will be a reception at the First United Methodist Church in Batesville.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 615 E. Main Street, Batesville AR 72501, the Old Independence Regional Museum, 380 S. 9th Street, Batesville, AR 72501 and the Independence County Humane Society, PO Box 3477, Batesville, AR 72503

Drury was certainly someone who made a difference to all who knew him. My grandparents, Paul and Pansy McNealy lived by the funeral home and as they aged he would pick up their paper at the end of the walkway and walk it to their front door. He did this incredible service for years without having been asked. He simply saw a need and stepped up to fill it. We will continue to share the story of his spirit. Anne and Paul,,

I really wanted to come today but didn't have a ride.I was really saddened to hear of Drury's death. I saw him a while back and knew age was catching up with him too. The thing I'll remember about Drury the most was his wonderful personality and his kindness to anyone or anything was awesome. He was a very special person and man and I see him sitting next to god proud and smiling. He'll have many jewels on his crown from Jesus, he was a remarkable person.
He will be deeply missed. Again my condolenses to you and your family at this time.

I will surely miss Drury calling us to see who has passed away, who the family met with, who's going on the service, and who's driving what vehicle to the funeral. Nine times out of ten he knew more than I did about the service and in particular the family.
Once he got all the information from us, he'd always say "Thank You" and occasionally he'd say "You're so nice". I missed his coming by when he was able. He was truly one of nicest people I have ever known and he will be missed immensely.

Even though we've not lived in Batesville for 17 years, the three of us could never forget a kind heart like Drury. From our first visit, he always knew that Tracy & Summer was my family and he never failed to ask about them or where they were at. He usually already knew the answer before I could answer him. He always had a smile and a kind word for everyone. Praying for peace and comfort during this time of loss of this sweet man.

Thoughts and Prayers extended to the family. Drury was a very special person and touched the lives of so many. He was always so kind and thoughtful. Regardless of how long it had been since he had seen you, he knew who you were and always had kind words. I am so glad I saw him recently at Fred's Fish House and got to visit with him.
