James "Sandy" Hugh Brewer

of Conway, AR

April 6, 1954 - September 21, 2014

James Hugh "Sandy" Brewer, Jr. of Conway died on Sunday, September 21, 2014. He was born on April 6, 1954, to James Hugh Brewer, Sr. and Bobbye Bryant Brewer of Conway. He graduated from Conway High School in 1972, and from the University of Central Arkansas (UCA) in 1976 with a B.S.E. in political science and English. While a student at UCA, Sandy was a member of Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity.
After graduating from UCA, Sandy taught English and journalism at Harrison High School from 1976 to 1984. He returned to Conway in 1984 to work for the Conway Corporation; and remained there as Manager of Materials and Property until he retired in August 2012.
On the occasion of his retirement from the Conway Corporation, Log Cabin Democrat writer Becky Harris wrote "At the retirement party on Tuesday, CEO Richie Arnold said the work Sandy Brewer did at the Conway Corporation could be measured by the behavior of his workers. 'They were always prepared for whatever came along,' Arnold said. 'We'll miss you every day. Please know you will always be a part of whatever we do.'"
Sandy served on the Conway City Council for six years from January 2001 through December 2006, representing the residents of Ward 2. While in office he served on the Ambulance Oversight Committee and the Pandemic Flu Committee. He was Chairman at all Uniformed Employees Appeals Board hearings and was Conway's MEMS Representative.
After leaving office he served on the Conway Civil Service Commission and Police Chief Search Committee. Sandy also served one term on the Faulkner County Quorum Court while a student at UCA. He often stated, "I was the only long-haired member of the Faulkner County Quorum Court."
Sandy served several years on the Toad Council and was a former member of the Optimist Club and Jaycees.
As a young boy Sandy joined Boy Scouts of America and earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He loved everything about scouting and treasured the time he went to National Jamboree in 1969 and the summer spent at Philmont.
He loved to hunt, fish, and commune with nature. He especially enjoyed spending time at his cabin in Calico Rock with his two dogs and teaching his granddaughters the joys of fishing, hunting, and enjoying the great outdoors.
Sandy was a Christian who accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior many years ago. He never wavered in his faith and looked forward to heaven.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents William C. and Vinnie Brewer of Pine Bluff, Alton and Elva Bryant of Conway, and his father-in-law Charles Phillips of Benton.
He is survived by his wife, Cheryl Phillips Brewer of Conway; a son, Zachary Brewer of Conway; a daughter, Cara Brewer Cates (Aaron) of Vilonia; a stepson, Rob Winters (Kelli) of Benton; and four grandchildren, Kali and Jillian Cates of Vilonia, and Lindsey and Lily Winters of Benton. He is also survived by his parents, James and Bobbye Brewer of Conway, a sister, Judy Brewer Austin (Milo) of Conway, his mother-in-law, Gloria Phillips and his sister-in-law, Linda Hambric (Carroll) of Benton.
Visitation will be held at Roller-McNutt Funeral Home, Conway, Arkansas from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, September 23, 2014. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at Woodland Heights Baptist Church in Conway. A private burial will be held on the grounds of his cabin at Culp, Arkansas.
Pallbearers include Frank Bartrow, Paul Bentley, Racy Garis, Cory Garrett, Mike Hale, and Paul Jones.

I was so sorry to hear of Sandy's passing. I first met him in 7th grade, and we went through all of junior high and high school in band together. The last time I saw him was at a high school reunion, and of course he made a joke. He was such a funny guy, and a good guy.
My condolences to his family and to those who loved him. I'm sure there were many.

This is my favorite poem, I thought it was perfect for the Brewer family.

The time you won your town the race
we chaired you through the market place.
Man and boy stood cheering and home we brought you shoulder high.
Today the road all runners come, shoulder high we bring you home.
and set you at your threshold down
Townsman of a settled town.
Smart lad to slip bedtimes away
From fields where glory does not stay
And early though the laurel grows
it withers quickly like the rose.
Eyes the shady night has shut
Cannot see the record cut
And silence sounds no worse than cheers
After earth has stopped the ears.
Now you will not swell the road
of lads that wore their honors out.
Runners whom renown outran
and the name died before the man.
So set before its echos fade
The fleet foot on the sill of shade
and hold the low lantern up
The still defended challenge cup.
and around that early laureled head
with flock to gaze the strengthless dead
and find unwithered on its curls
the garland briefer than a girls.

So sorry to hear of Sandy's passing. I met Sandy when we were about 11 or 12 years old, when mowing his grandfather, Mr. Alton Bryant's, yard at the eight mile store. We lost track of each other after we got to our teenage years, but met up again after he went to work for Conway Corp and I worked for ATT. I always admired him as an honest and fair man. I know this loss is hard as I lost my son 8 years ago and my father this May. Please know that you are in our prayers and may God bring peace to all of your family. Jim

Sandy was a wonderful example of a good man, a good father, and a good public servant. He learned from the examples of his father and mother, who were and are exceptional people. When Sandy spoke, people listened. He didn't waste words and he always stuck to his principles, whether some in the public arena agreed or not. He looked out for his fellow man, especially those who might not feel they had much of a voice. He was their voice. He was a loving grandfather, father, son, and brother, and a loyal friend. He was stubborn as all get out, and yet had a really soft heart. I am thankful we got to visit with him some over the last few weeks and know how thankful you are to have had him there with you and been able to share all the love in your hearts and have such good talks the last few weeks and months. Thanks for sharing him during that time with all who loved him and wanted to tell him. He was not afraid. God bless you all and God bless and keep Sandy in His care. We love you.

Sandy was a fine man who spoke and stood by his beliefs and convictions! The City of Conway is a much better place to live because of Sandy Brewer. He gained my full respect when he served on the City Council. I was talking with him one day and laughing and I told him then , "You spend the City's money as though it's yours and watch every penny!". The City would be so much better off financially if more Council Persons were/are like Sandy. You'll be missed by MANY my friend! Condolences to those he is leaving behind but they can find comfort in the fact that the pain and suffering are over and you're at peace in a better place !
