Joyce Mann Chiles Mathews

of Knoxville, TN

October 29, 1918 - May 6, 2011

Joyce Mann Chiles Mathews left this world peacefully on May 6, 2011, to go to be with the Lord she loved. Joyce was a resident of Brakebill Nursing Home in Knoxville, Tennessee, where she was cared for by a loving staff. She was born on October 29, 1918, in Ruleville, Mississippi, to Myrtle and Victor Mann. She was a devoted daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great, great grandmother - as well as friend to all she knew. Joyce was a charter member of Calvary Baptist Church in Osceola, Arkansas, where she served faithfully for almost 50 years, as WMU leader, Sunday School teacher, choir member and many other positions. Joyce was preceded in death by her husband Russell Bowers Chiles, her husband James Mathews, and her brother Ray Mann. She is survived by the family who loved her: sister Billie Gaines Mann, son Russ Chiles, Jr., and his wife, Becky; son Ron Chiles and his wife, Jo Anne; daughter Vicki Purifoy and her husband, John; grandchildren, Trey, Missy, Jeremy and Colby Chiles, Michael and Drew Purifoy. She is also survived by eight great-grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren. Services were held at Roller Swift Funeral Home on May 10, and Joyce was laid to rest next to her husband, Russell Chiles, Sr.. To those who would like to honor the memory of Joyce, memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, Osceola, Arkansas, or the organization of your choice.

Dear Vicki, I just heard today about your mothers passing. I have such fond memories of your mom while growing up. I remember how sweet she was to all of us neighborhood kids. I enjoyed seeing your mom and visiting with her about the "old days" before she moved. My thoughts & prayers are with you and your brothers.

Joyce was a wonderful person and very loving. She became a good friend of mine when I came to Calvary Baptist Church. We sang in the choir together she had such a beautiful alto voice. One thing that really made me appreciate her she came to the hospital when my daughter had to have emergency surgery. I was a divorced person and I needed support and she was always there for me. I hope you all had the song played "WHEN THE SAINTS GO MARCHING IN" she told me to be sure that it was played, but I am no longer a part of the funeral home. Sorry I couldn't be there yesterday.

I grew up knowing Mrs. Chiles. She was my GA leader at Calvary Church. She was the mother of my first boy friend and classmate, Russ Chiles. She was the aunt of one of my best friends, Becky Mann. I loved Joyce Chiles, nearly as a second mother. My sincere sympathy to her family.
