Theda Ann (Keathley) Sowell, 74, of Clarksville, formerly of Conway, died Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at Arkansas Heart Hospital. She was born November 5, 1934, in Conway, a daughter of the late Otis Ray and Georgia Ann (Oliver) Keathley. She was also preceded in death by husbands, Theo Stephen Bates and Wayne Sowell; a son, Randy Bates; her only sister, Mary Jane Speights Dean; step-children, Linda Sowell; and Doris Watson Evans.
Mrs. Sowell was a member of Holland Baptist Church; a home maker, had worked at Grandy's in Conway and the Log Cabin Democrat in years past. She was past Grand Matron of Order of Eastern Star.
She is survived by a special friend, Floyd Sells of Clarksville; children, Susan Holtzman of Phoenix, Arizona; Ramona Bates, M.D. (Brett Herndon) of Little Rock; Jeanne Linn Parker (Steve); Cathy Throneberry Dilbeck (the late Joel) of Greenbrier; John Bates (Juanita) of Bee Branch; Fred Bates of Enola; Glen Sowell (Janell Kersey) of Mexico Beach, Florida; step-children, Steve Bates of Spartanburg, South Carolina; Judy Stubblefield of Shreveport, Lousisiana; George Sowell (Donna) of Beebe; Connie Atkinson (Carroll Ed) of Houston, Arkansas; Dub Sowell (Carla Sue) Jena, Louisiana; twenty-eight grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; a nephew, Jerry Speights of Heber Springs; and a niece, Brenda Speights of Conway.
Visitation will be 6 8:00 p.m., Thursday, May 21, 2009, at the funeral home. Funeral will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, May 22, 2009, in the chapel of Roller-McNutt Funeral Home, Conway. Burial will follow in Crestlawn Memorial Park, under the direction of Roller-McNutt Funeral Home of Conway. 501-327-7727.

My Arkansas days were during the 70's, and I can't remember a single FHA Mother Daughter Banquet during my time at VHS without Mrs. Sowell's lilacs/wisteria blooms..... I think of her every time spring rolls around and I smell their fragrence.
