Steve Platt

of Vilonia, AR

October 1, 1953 - July 4, 2007

Steve Platt, age 53, of Vilonia, passed away Wednesday, July 4, 2007.

Born October 1, 1953 in Batesville, AR, he graduated from North Little Rock, AR. High School. After completing his degree at Henderson State University in Music Education, he began his band directing career at Camden Harmony Grove. From there, he built band programs in McGhee, AR, and Beebe, AR. He returned to Harmony Grove for 11 years, then came to Vilonia, AR, where he was the band director for the ''Pride of Faulkner County'' for 16 years. Mr. Platt was inducted into the Phi Beta Mu Band Fraternity and was a member of ASBOA. Under his direction, the Vilonia Band received countless awards and accolades, including ''The Brandon Award'', Arkansas' highest honor to be given to a band.

A published writer and author of several Southern gospel hymns, he was of the Baptist faith.

Steve could play virtually every instrument, except one the fiddle. Because of his love and devotion to music, he picked up a fiddle 3 years ago and has been playing it ever since.

He loved to fish, cook out, and go to the cabin, but most of all, he loved his wife, his daughters, his family, and his band kids.

Steve, a caring man of faith, was often asked by students and members of the community, to be put on his ''Hit List'', which referred to his personal prayer list.

His father, Elmer A. Platt, preceded him in death.

Steve is survived by his wife of 33 years, Susie Platt of Vilonia; daughter, Ashley Mlay and husband Kevin Mlay of Okinawa, Japan; daughter, Amy Platt of Texarkana; granddaughter, Kaeleigh Mlay of Okinawa; his mother, Joann Platt of North Little Rock; brothers, David Platt of Dallas, TX, Eddie Platt of Maumelle, Gus Platt, John Davidson, and Charlie Platt, all of North Little Rock; their families and a host of family and friends.

Services celebrating Steve's life will be held on Saturday, July 7, at 10:00 a.m. at the Phillip D. Weaver Football Stadium in Vilonia, Rev. Ken Jordan officiating.

Interment will be Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Holly Springs Cemetery in Star City, AR, Rev. Dwayne Roper officiating.

A gathering of remembrance will be Friday from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Friendship Baptist Church Family Life Center, Vilonia.

Pallbearers are Phillip Nichols, Clay Paul, Scott Maddox, Kevin Mlay, Damon Donnell, and Gary Meggs.

Memorials may be sent to the Vilonia Music Department c/o Vilonia Schools.

Arrangements are by Roller-McNutt Funeral Home in Conway.

Dear Platt Family,

I know your heart continues to ache by that huge hole that was left by Steve's passing. I don't know why God took him, I can only surmise that he needed a jazz band director for the angels?

I never pass into Arkansas, see it on the map, or hear a band without thinking of my dear friend, Steve and the first year I worked the UAM band camp. I too, miss our talks sometimes of an hour at a time. I would call him and interrupt his fiddle practice. (What a fun thing)

What a blast!! To Susie and the girls, I wish God's extreme comfort to you in this conintual emptiness. My heart aches too.
Best wishes as you continue in your lives.

I just recently heard about Mr. Platt. I went to Vilonia the first year he was band director. He was a very hard worker, and made sure we did the same. He was a big cut-up when time permitted. But one of my favorite things he would do is have us join hands for prayer before performances. I grew up in a pastor's home, but had never seen a teacher led prayer before every game. I was amazed. He would always scold us for making off colored remarks and ask us how we could expect the Lord to help us in competitions ( or in life) with us acting like we were. He made a very large impression on me. He helped build my self confidence in music. He inspired me and also took time out one on one to help me. But most of all he was a great witness. Mrs. Platt, I had worked at a local radio station and found one of his groups recordings. It had a number on it to call, so I did. I was able to tell him how thankful I was for you guys, and know I would like to tell you. Keep being a light, it will be rewarded. I'll be praying for your family.

I no longer attend Vilonia High School... I did 3rd grade through the 8th grade. Mr. Platt... wasn't just a band teacher... every time I seen him, and even if I were having a bad day.. all he would do is simply smile at me. and it brightened my whole day up. My favorite class to go to was band... I looked forward to going to school each and every day. I loved playing in the band! and then I moved to Conway. I didnt so much have an interest in band anylonger. I remember the last time I had seen Mr. Platt... it was the Christmas parade before he had passed. I had went up there just to see my band play... and of course to see him. I was so happy to see him. he asked me if I was in the band... I told him no... he said that he wished I would join the band and so I told him that I would try. he said that I was really good at it.... eventually I had moved to Tennessee... I found out about Mr. Platt passing because of my dad calling me and telling me the news... that school year... I joined Page High School Band... because I made a promise to Mr. Platt that I would atleast try. and I tried. and I look back... and everytime I pick up my instrument... I remember that Steve Platt taught me how to play.

For some reason, I was sitting here thinking about the past. I remembered that of all of the schools I ever went to, I was most miserable at Beebe high school. The reason is that if your grandfather didn't go to that school, then you were an outsider and they made sure you knew it. Kids are cruel, and kids in tight-knit, small communities are even worse to outsiders. Then I remembered what a bright spot my time in the band was. Of everyone I encountered in Beebe, Mr. Platt took an interest in me. It always felt like he was one of "us" instead of one of "them". He had a way of making anyone he dealt with feel special. I remember an August day when the heat was almost unbearable, we were practicing marching. He was shouting at everyone that I was the only one out there that was really trying, and that everyone else needed to shape up. I've always considered him to be a great man, and it sticks with me that he honored me by singling me out that time. It's funny how memory works. I remember that he drove a gold 1978 Pontiac Grand Prix, and that it was a nice car. When I look at the picture of him, I'm reminded of the picture I have in my mind of him. I knew him in 1982, when he didn't have grey hair. I remember that I always thought he looked like Garfield the cat. In fact, I think I even drew a picture of Garfield and gave it to him once, telling him it was a picture of him. I decided to do a Google search for "Platt Band Beebe". My heart sunk when I found the article about his passing. I wish I could have told him that I still benefit from his care all those years ago.

To Susie, David, and all of the immediate family and in-laws: I am so sorry for the passing of Steve. As you may remember, I was a music student at Henderson a couple of years ahead of Steve and got to know him and David very well. Steve was as witty as he was musical, and I always got a laugh when I was around him. I saw him later in life when he judged one of my choirs when I was choral director at Benton High School and got to visit with him then. I will always remember him for "up" personality, his talent, and friendship. I did not find out about his passing until a couple of days after the funeral; 'so sorry I did not get to attend. But my prayers are with you all. I am currently serving at First United Methodist Church of Hot Springs as Senior Minister of Music. Please relay on to David that I would like to make contact with him sometime. My home e-mail is ronfhall@sbcglobal.net and my cell # is 501-802-2368. And, Susie--God is good, just lean on Him. What a wonderful man.!!! Memories of Mr. Platt will always make me smile. Each year at Christmas time, I could always count on him to ask if the band could sponsor a child or two--- providing toys and clothes for Vilonia children in need. He and his students gave with happy and generous hearts... I'm not sure who received the greatest gift- - - the children opening the presents on Christmas morning or the band students who were taught the greatest lesson in life.

I can honestly say that I would not be the musician I am today if were not for Mr. Platt. My three sisters and I lived, breathed, and ate the Vilonia Band Program. In college, I decided that I would learn to play the guitar. I could hear the trumpet notes in my head and would use those to find the notes on the frets. Mr. P taught me to sing in the small ragamuffin choir we had in Zero period at 7:05 a.m. He was dedicated to the music program at VHS. For that I am grateful, and owe the abilities that I have now to him. Thanks Mr. P!!! I'll see you soon enough my friend.

The Platt family has been special to me for 35 years. I always knew that Steve was going to be someone special. Even as a young teenager he had that infectious personality. I will always remember the may trips with the "Platt Boys" as they sang around the state. Mrs. JoAnn, Mr. Elmer, David, Steve, Gus, Eddie, John and Charlie. Those were wonderful days in my life. They gave me the love of singing and the joy of music. I will never forget those wonderful memories. Then many years later when Steve and Suzie moved to Vilonia, Steve would umpire baseball games when my son, Cash, was playing ball in Greenbrier. And the memories of Steve's band are wonderful. I am so, so sorry about the loss of this special man. To the whole Platt family, You are all in my thoughts and prayers. Steve will be missed. My love to you all, Martha Bailey McMillen

I got to know Steve when I sold him jackets for his band & want you to know that I consider myself lucky to have had the opportunity to get to know him. As already stated so many times, Mr. Platt was a great teacher, friend, mentor, individual, etc. He taught us so much more than music. He taught us about life. Without his influence, so many individuals would not be where they are today. Just like so many others, I am a better person just from the 4 short years that I got to know Mr. Platt and participate in his choir and band at Harmony Grove High School. My heart goes out to Susie and the girls. Thank you for sharing your husband and daddy with so many of us throughout the years. Rachel Crews Graves, HGHS Class of 1990

Thank you for allowing us and our town to share in your daily lives and this wonderful experience. As Dr. Frank Mitchell said today at the service, Steve started in Harmony Grove in 1975. I was in the band with 16 students and helped recruit the other members Dr. Mitchell mentioned today. What good times those were. I was fortunate to have him as a teacher my senior year, 1975-76. 1982 - Steve and his family came back to HG and taught for 11 years. At this time we became friends as so did our daughters. Through the years he raised many children, not only his. Molded them in to disciplined people and taught them lessons that will last a life time. I will never forget my daughter joining the band in 6th grade and coming home only to say that Mr. Platt wouldn't let her play the instrument she wanted to (flute, because it was small). He handed her a saxophone and said "Here, you will play this. Your mom could play the heck out of it and you will to!!!" To this day, Angela still plays her saxophone and thrives off of the lessons learned from the Platt residence. Not all of the lessons were from Steve. Susie, you taught lessons as well. Students watch you and watched you all along. What a devoted and supportive wife you were to Steve. Mother, friend and mentor to his students just as he was. May God wrap his arms around you and your girls during this time and give you comfort.

Dear Susie, Like everyone who knew Steve Platt, I too have my own little story and memories. Before I moved to the High School Cafe' Mr. Platt started calling me "Mammie" Because I am just as round as I am tall, I wear bandanas, and I would answer him when he was talking to someone else. As a joke that first Christmas I found a "Aunt Jemimma" bank made of cast iron and gave it to him. We talked about both loving old Bing Crosby movies "White Christmas" and "Holiday Inn" Not sure if he kept it but I sure got one of his famous belly laughs when I gave it to him. I will miss him but I know we'll meet again. It helps with sorrow to know in my heart so many of the people I hold dear are waiting in heaven for me. My prayers will continue for your entire family like everyone I pray for daily. My Love and God's Blessings, Telela aka "Mammie"

Mr. Platt was such an inspiration to all that were fortunate to be in his path. I was in his first band at Harmony Grove from 1976-1979. I carried his new white tuba, I was a tiny little girl with long blonde hair happy to show it off, I was also on the first dancing flag line. I think I may have been his problem child during those years, but he always smiled, laughed and he was wonderful just the same. He brought such excitement to a small town and kept all of us teens busy and out of trouble. He was always so exciting to watch while we waited at competition for our scores. He almost could not stand the wait. Even now, some of my fondest High School memories involved band and Mr. Platt. Susie my thoughts and prayers are with you, the girls and all the family.

Of all the teachers I have known, Mr. Platt towered above all others. He was known and loved by many students, of which I was one. I wish I could attend services honoring his life, but I am currently stuck in the Oklahoma oilfield for a few more days. My heart is with the Platts, and they are also in my prayers. If there is anything I can do, please contact me. I'll do anything I am able.

Susie, Ashley, and Amy: I never know what to say at a moment like this and it's even harder for me now because for many years your family was like my own. All my favorite memories from high school involved a Platt in some way or another. I know that nothing can be said to ease your grief, but I saw this and thought it was appropriate: "We little knew that morning that God was going to call your name. In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone; for part of us went with you the day God called you home. You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide, and though we cannot see you, you are always by our side. Our family chain is broken and nothing seems the same, but as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again."

Susie, Ashley, Amy, I cannot begin to tell you how sorry I am to hear of Mr. Platt's passing. He touched so many lives, including mine. He demanded much of his students, but we were always willing to give him everything we had because we all knew that he asked a lot because he cared a lot. I'm sure you'll hear this a thousand times, but he was a wonderful teacher, friend, and man. He meant the world to his students. I hope that you all find strength in each other and in all the many memories. I will miss knowing that he is out there doing what he did best, teaching and encouraging another young person. Please know that my family has you all in our thoughts and prayers. Catherine

Mr. Platt came to Vilonia 2 years after I did. When he came, he began to introduce my 6th grade students to beginning band. How EXCITED they were - just to get their instruments!! Our band became good, and big! Our band is still big, but it's nothing compared to the band of thousands of lives that Mr. Platt influenced in such a positive way. What a tribute that band is! Mrs. Platt, Amy and Ashley, our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family as you go through this time of sorrow. It is always hard to lose someone we love, especially someone like Mr. Platt. Words cannot express our deepest sympathy at this time. But know, that Mr. Platt will always be remembered in the highest regards. Our sons, Adam and Heath were in the Vilonia bands from sixth grade through graduation, and we observed the dedication and love that Mr. Platt gave to each and every student he taught. We watched our sons do the very best they could because they did not want to let Mr. Platt down. He inspired his students to be their best, to give their best, to do their best, and he did this with a Christian faith and a love of music. Never before had we ever seen football players giving up their half-time in order to march with their beloved band. Just know that he will be missed greatly by so many, and that he touched so many lives and made them better. And know, that he is still making beautiful music, only now in Heaven's orchestra. May God keep you in his loving embrace, The Hensleys

Mr. Platt asked us to remember him as "the Music Man" at his final concert at Harmony Grove. I will remember him for that and a few other reasons. I will remember him for his kindness and his humor. I will remember him tell us jokes right before we begin to play. I will remember him telling us stories until we were laughing so hard tears were running down our faces. I will also remember him getting so mad at us he would jump up and down in the bleachers and you would secretly be praying it wasn't you. I remember him throwing his glasses across the field at a competion and him chewing us out for not doing as good as we should have(we won sweepstakes). His dedication was unsurpassed ,and the love his students (both past and present) reflects our dedication to him. To say he will be missed is an understatement. I think everyone who had the pleasure of knowing was made a better person for the experience. I know I was.

Mr Platt gave Adam (who wants to be a band director and at school at UCA )the love of marching and he taught so many people so many wonderful things, including how to have fun. He also taught them to be self-disciplined and respectful. He will be missed by everyone who knew him, because they all loved him. When a loved one becomes a memory, that memory becomes a treasure. I will never forget singing harmony with Steve ( him and I are the same age), David, Gus, John and little Charlie!! Those times were some of the best of my life! Mrs. Platt, Ashley and Amy, Thanks for being so supportive of Mr. Platt during the time he spent mentoring and loving our students in our community. Your support of your husband and Dad has made an impact on our community that words can't express. I have been taught that behind every GREAT man is a great support system and we are grateful to you. We thank you for sharing an outstanding leader with us all these years. Our hearts are heavy and we are hurting with you. Don't feel like you need to go through this alone. If you need anything your family (Vilonia community) is there for you. There are so many willing to help, just let us know what is needed and we will be there. It is our time to share with you. mrs. platt and family, we are so sorry for your loss. we lost my mother last week, even though she didnt know mr. platt personally, she always looked forward to seeing the vilonia band perform, (and her grandchildren), she admired mr. platt for all he did for the band. it brings me a little comfort knowing that she is getting to know him, because she admired him.we know that he loved what he did and he loved his kids.we are proud that our children had the oppurtunity for mr. platt to be their teacher. he had a profound impact on this whole community, and we love and appreciate you both. i was in the first band vilonia ever had, and i was always so proud to see what mr. platt did for vilonia. one thing that brings to my mind is that mr. platt always had time to say hello, sometimes you could tell that he was on an important mission but if he didnt tell you a "story" he always recognized you and made you feel special. mr. platt will be missed deeply. our thoughts and prayers are with you. love, craig, barb, celeste, katie and cody

Steve Platt was a great person and above all a great band director. He will be missed by everyone. Steve made Vilonia bands what it is today because making the Vilonia bands the best was what he wanted. He was a caring person and if you needed someone to talk to, he was there. Our daughter Samantha Brown has been in the band program for 3 years and we couldn't have been more pleased. Mr. Platt impressed us the first time we met him. He expected a lot from his students, but he gave as much if not more than he got. I can honestly say that he will be missed by everyone who knew him. I only hope that his current students and those to come will honor him by not only continuing in the band, but by proving to him that all his hardwork will not have been in vain. He believed in the kids and the program. Let's continue to make him proud.

Through discipline, leadership, and love, Mr. Platt earned the respect and love of all who knew him. I feel blessed that he taught and served as a role model to our kids. I've had many talks with Mr. Platt about planes. He swore he would never fly unless he had to go to Japan. He managed to hold his word on that subject as he did on so many other subjects. Mr. Platt was my second "daddy" for 6 years as he was to a TON of other people. It will certainly be weird to come back to watch football games and not see him walking around furiously like he was on a 007 mission. I just pray that all of the things he started in Vilonia will continue to be taken care of in his absense. The Christmas family, the hit list, the infamous CORN bucket, the prayer before games and events, etc... Also someone HAS to wipe the chalkboard off with their hand and then leave that perfect handprint on thier butt. I'm sure Mr. Platt would appreciate that. It seems surreal that this is all happening, and that I am sitting here typing this, but it's true. I can just picture him sitting on his front porch in Heaven just playing that fiddle 'till his heart's content. It will be great music. And he has taught so many thousands of us to play that great music, so that one day, we can play it for the Lord too. Love, Bonnie Etchieson a.k.a. Dead Lips (trumpet player!)

He always had an ear for anyone that had a problem. You knew he would sit down and listen to your problem and help you out. He was loved by many. And cherised by all. He gave us all hope. When we all started off as band kids. We thought we knew it all and that as soon as we got a instrument in our hands we would be GREAT.. But as soon as we heard ourself and knew that it just didn't come like that, we wanted to quit. But he would say, " With a little hard work and pratice. You'll learn and you'll get it." Our deepest thoughts and prayers go out to the Platt family. Mr. Platt touched many people's lives and my children adored him. He made Vilonia band what it is with his love ,dedication and hard work. In this time, may you find comfort , for God has chosen Mr.Platt to lead a new band in Heaven and carry out his love of music with the angels up above. God bless you all.

Words cannot express the heartache we feel for the loss of our Mr. Platt. His band is the Pride of Faulkner County but he was also our Pride of Faulker County for all the good he did in our town, for our school and for our kids. He will be so very missed.

Mr. Platt was the glue of Vilonia and there has never been anyone with a bigger heart for the kids. Many kids got opportunities they would have never had if it hadn't been for him. He gave them life lessons and I am blessed my daughter has been a part of this. He will be greatly missed. The current high school marching band, this is your time to keep the band program what Mr. Platt has created. Don't let him down, yall do your very best and remember what he taught you. Let's keep PLATT PRIDE in Vilonia!! GO EAGLES!!! GO BAND!!!!!!!!

My Prayers are with the family, I will always remember Steve Platt as a kind and caring man. He has accomplished so much for Vilonia as a whole. He instilled so much into "all" his kids, not just music, but values, honesty and dedication. In Christian love.

My Paryers and thoughts are with you. Steve Platt touched people in a way that made a life time impression. Candice was telling me about one time "Mr. Platt got upset with me" after asking questions and finding out the "root" of the problem I ask her had she given her best? She said no I was in a hurry, and I told her that explained it. Steve Platt expected people to try to do their best, not more than their best, but their best. He had a way of making people want to do their best.

It's hard to believe....I am so sorry. He was a loved man, not only by his family, but by the community, the school, and people all over the state of Arkansas. He was a great man, a brilliant band director, and a friend and he will be greatly missed. My prayers and thoughts to the family, hang in there.

To Mr. Platt's wife, family, students, and fellow band directors: On behalf of my family and the Greenbrier Band Program, please know that we are thinking about you all and praying for you. Mr. Platt was a legend in this state and in this community. He was my friend and mentor, and somebody that helped me when I needed it. He will certainly be missed.
