Murray Grey McCullough

of North Little Rock, AR

August 15, 1908 - November 21, 2006

Murray Grey McCullough, 98, of North Little Rock, died at his home, Monday, November 20, 2006 He was born on August 15, 1908 in Plymouth, Indiana, son of Russell McCullough and Maude Rupert McCullough. He grew up in Garret, Ind. In Hugh school Murray lettered in basketball and track.

He often caught the ''Milk Train'' in Garrett and rode to his McCullough grandparents, dairy farm to spend the weekend. His grandfather Rupert raised Morgan horses and was a close friend to Mr. Studebaker of the Studebaker Buggy Works, later to become makers of the Studebaker automobile.

He was born in the time of horse, buggy and train travel. When he was a boy he was given a pony and cart of his own. Murray played duets with his mother, he on the violin and she on the piano

During his high school years he formed a dance band and in the summertime, played for dances at lake resorts in Indiana.

He started college in Manchester, Ind. At Manchester College, then later transferred to the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana. It was there that he began dating another student, Martha May Hatch, whom he would marry. The couple located in South Bend, Ind., Where they began their trucking company, The Overnight Express. 4 children were born in South Bend: Nancy, Bruce, Kent, and Andrew.

In 1938 Murray was accepted as the contractor for the U.S. Postal Service in Little Rock, Arkansas, to transport the mail to and from the main post office to the train station, bus station, airport, and other post offices in the area.

He loved Little Rock. Martha bore him 3 more children: Charlotte, John, and Marcia. Murray and Martha helped found the Oak Forest Methodist Church.

During WWII, Murray did his bit by working at the Maumelle Ordinance Works. After the war he took a job with Winthrop Laboratories as a pharmaceutical representative. During his 30 years with Winthrop he was consistently among the top 3 people in sales nationally.

Murray's love for horses, began at his grandfather's farm, lasted all his life. He shared his sport with his seven children, horseback riding several times a week. He was still saddling his own horse at the age of 90. It took the loss of his sight to get him out of the saddle. He remained upbeat after his blindness saying, ''Think of what you can do, not of what you cannot do''.

He has been able to live at home, due to the unselfish love and devotion of his son John McCullough, who has been both companion and caretaker in his final years. Enough cannot be said in praise of John.

Mr. McCullough was preceded in death by his lovely wife, Martha. He and ''Marty'' were married for over 50 years and also a son, Andrew.

He leaves his children: Nancy Clark (Mrs. Richard) of Little Rock, Bruce McCullough (Frances Lang) of Ozark, Kent of Bryant, Charlotte Penn of Paris, AR., John of the home, and Apple McCullough of Little Rock.

He leaves also 14 grandchildren, and18 great grandchildren. Lastly, he leaves his wonderful friend ''Lois Jones'' whom he met at a dance. They loved going out dancing for 20 years. In Murray's last years they often stayed in on Saturday Night, listening to Lawrence Welk, and dancing in front of the television.
