Raymond Charles Coday, Jr. "Ray Lincoln"

of North Little Rock, AR

March 6, 1942 - September 18, 2006

Raymond Charles Coday, Jr. ''Ray Lincoln'', age 64, of North Little Rock died at his home, Monday, September 18, 2006. Born on March 6, 1942 in Dallas, Texas, he was the son of the late Raymond Charles Coday, Sr. and Veronica Jones Coday. A well know radio personality, Ray began his radio career in Roswell, New Mexico and later worked for numerous stations including powerhouses such as WBAP in Fort Worth, WNOE in New Orleans, WOAI, San Antonio, KKYK-FM and KAAY in Little Rock. Lincoln with his guns-a-blazing, no nonsense personality dominated the Little Rock radio market in the 70's with his Ray and Ram program on KKYK-FM. In addition to himself he also did the voice of mythical character, Ram Led, a crusty, West Texas cowboy who often exhibited outrageous speech and behavior.

On two separate occasions, Lincoln worked at KAAY in Little Rock as morning drive time DJ and Program Director. This was near the end of the AM station's market dominance with its Top 40 format. Between stints at radio stations, Lincoln worked for companies doing record promotions.

In 1983 he returned to Little Rock as afternoon talk show host at KARN. With the exception of a six year hiatus to live in Dallas and one year at Talk 103.7 across town, Lincoln finished his on-air career at KARN in 2000.

In addition to creating Ram Led, Lincoln developed another imaginary character he named Sport Jackson, a black, horse race tout. He voiced this character in a dialect, which came naturally to him considering he grew up in predominately black East Dallas. Though the lovable character was a charade, his passion for horseracing and handicapping was legendary. Ray was one of the most knowledgeable handicappers in the nation.

Lincoln served two tours of duty in the United States Military, one as a Marine and one in the United States Army. His foreign stations included Germany and Vietnam.

He is survived by his ''British Born Bride'' Maxine. Ray has two daughters, Alesia Coday, Angelia Hernandez and husband Christopher, and stepson Christian Cole and wife Janet, stepdaughter Melissa Zandevakili and her husband Hamid. He has 6 grandchildren, Brittan, Meagan, Abigail Sara, Darian, Alexander Samuel, Emilie and Raymond due in November. He has two sisters, Bernadine Jones and Joanne Giles; one nephew and many nieces.

Those closest to Ray Lincoln use a number of words to describe him…Strong, intense, passionate, loyal, talented, humorous and driven. All would agree he owned one of the fastest, most brilliant minds ever to perform on the airwaves of central Arkansas.

The funeral service will be at 10:00 A. M., Thursday, September 21, 2006 at Parkway Place Baptist Church, 300 Parkway Place, Little Rock.

The family will receive friends at Roller-Chenal Funeral Home (501)224-8300 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m., Wednesday.

Memorials may be made to ARORA, 1100 N. University, Suite 200, Little Rock, Arkansas 72207.

I miss you so much....life has changed so much since you've been gone. Chris passed from cancer at only 40 and all I wanted was to feel a hug from you, a comforting therapy session. You've gained 4 more grand babies, Layla and twins Christopher & Jacob, along with baby Dimitri. What I would give to hear you say "how's your heart?" I love you and I miss you forever, ever 143

I'll always be grateful to Ray Lincoln for so many great life and work lessons he taught me. Ray hired me from Muscle Shoals in 1980 to come back to Little Rock, where I had been stationed in the USAF and working part-time on the radio. He was more than a PD, more than a boss, a great friend...and just an amazing on-air personality, who OWNED Little Rock Radio for years. We had many phone conversations long after his, and my, radio days...I'd love to be able to call him one more time or go for a ride in his drop-top blue convertible.

I remember listening to Ray and Ram when I was just a kid in the early 70's. Then many years later I used to call in and do impersonations when Ray was on the Buzz. Those were some great times. He will be missed for many years to come.

When I was a child, I knew early on I wanted to be in radio. I have managed to make that happen and enjoy those theaters of the mind, creating them. Ray Lincoln, as I knew him most of this time, showed a theater well appointed, staffed and cast. I was a kid in the early 80s in Little Rock, moving to Texarkana in that era. When I got to visit later, I was dismayed that one of my idols had vanished from Little Rock airwaves. Since then, I've been listening to his shows I recorded and sought information about where he went. Now I know. Mr. Coday, you are an inspiration and still remembered, still celebrated.

It's hard to believe it's been so long since you left us. I will never have the quick wit and comedic intelligence as Ray did, I still to this day occassionally imitate him from time to time around my friends and family. My kids will say to me "Daddy you're so funny" To which I reply "No, no I'm not. I'm just remembering a hilarious man long before your time" . Rest in Peace Raymond. You touched many life's during and still after your own.

I still miss you Daddy. Time heals?? It's just a reminder that you're gone. Since Baby Raymond was born, who is almost 6 now, you have another granddaughter, Alyssa. And even a great-granddaughter named Sophia. Your baby girl is a grandma now. How I wish you were here. It's really just not the same without you. 143 Daddy.

I first heard Ray & Ram on Woai at 5:30 in the morning while I was getting ready to go to my Senior year High School Classes at Midland High in Midland Texas 1973 1974. Then I continued to enjoy Ray & Ram while I lived in Clovis New Mexico in 1974 and in to 1975. Then I enjoyed Ray & Ram in 1980 while traveling to Rogers Arkansas. The person I wastraveling with told me Ray Liincoln ownes Arkansas.
I spent from 1970 through 2008 in and out of Radio.
"If your next door neighbor is not listening to WOAI throw a rock through their window and tell them they're waisting electricity" said Ray one morning.
I miss him very much.

Daddy....I miss you ~ almost two years and I still cry for you ~ at night ~ while driving ~ while thinking about nothing that pertains to you. Everytime I lose a friend or a friend loses a family member I relate because of you. I miss your face, your hugs, your voice. I hate that you dont know Raymond and he wont know you. He has such a personality, I think he will be an entertainer like you and he can mimic so many things and change his voice, again like you. Another birthday without you. I love you and miss you.

He has your temper LOL. I wish you could have met him & loved him & cherished him, as I know you would have. I love you Daddy & I miss you so, so much.

Uncle Brother, I think about you every day. Even though we didn't talk all that often, I knew I could call you if I wanted to. I miss you. Thank you for being my favorite uncle and for being there for me over the years. I have many great memories. I remember when I was your only niece and you'd always bring prizes home from the Fair for me. I remember being so proud that "MY Uncle Brother" had one of the first Mustangs. I remember you taking me to homecoming in my junior year of high school because I didn't have a date........and being so proud that my "date" and his Dodge Charger was so impressive. I remember listening to Sam and Dave's "Soul Man" and trying to count how many times they sang "I'm a Soul Man". I remember you being the most important man in my life in my early years. I remember almost losing you a few years ago and being so thankful that we were able to have you around for a little while longer. Those are just a few memories........there are so many more. Thank you for being you..........I love you more than you love me.

For those who attended Ray’s service on Thursday – there was an introduction to “Peace in the Valley”. I knew emotions might not allow me to deliver the story and still be able to sing. I’d like to share it now. In September, 2003 Ray had a Heart Mate implanted to prolong his life until a donor heart was available. Most of you know he had a series of strokes a few days later. His mind was unclear at best – not being sure who or where he was, etc. Maxine and I were standing over his bed in ICU one day, talking about hymns and favorite songs. She asked me to sing and I began singing “Peace in the Valley”. From the depths of wherever Ray’s mind had taken him, he started singing with me. He still knew the song. Ray and I were later able to discuss the significance of that moment. He was “tired and so weary”. He knew there would be “peace in the valley for him some day”. At the time we thought his day of peace might be soon. But, God's plan was to restore his mind, give him a heart (Thanks to Duane Compton & family!!) and give him almost 3 more years with his family and friends. On Monday, September 18, 2006, Ray got his peace. As the song says – “There’ll be no sadness, no sorrow, no trouble I’ll see. There will be peace in the valley for me.” I’m going to miss Ray like crazy!! But, I know some day I’ll join him in heaven and we’ll get to sing together again. Until then, I thank God for the blessing of knowing Ray and calling him my friend. I Love You Ray!!

Maxine: I thank you from the bottom of my heart and soul for your grace, compassion and love, in allowing me the privilege to come backinto Raymond's life after so many years. I now realize that those years of separation between him and me were necessary, in order that when I did parachute back into hislife , we would have his undivided attention, not an easy task. But God's timing and plans areperfect, we now know with certainty. I will forever love and cherish my relationship with Raymond, and with you. Greetings and long-overdue salutations from a broadcaster who LOVED what Ray did, especially his final times on-air while I was attending computer school during 1999-2000 as I'm now both a broadcaster and computer technician. I've been in and out of the radio biz since 1982, and very few occupied the Top Dog category in my book as Ray has. There are but 2 others of greatness from this market I could compare, and Ray could really spice up a political discussion as neither the others! I'll never forget the times he'd talk about "H.R.H. William Jefferson Clinton" and of so many other subjects he could give listeners a new angle, not to be logical, not too pushy, not too slow as to ruin the focus to the others (as his Obit correctly states, he was a MASTER at fast thinking) - but get that laugh as the conclusion! That's not easy to do, but for those who never understood that, they "just don't get it" didn't they? Such a loss on their part, and with his passing, such a loss for everyone who DID get it! Those afternoons on KARN 920 when I had the greatest appreciation for his awesome talents will be what I miss the most. Finally, with all the medicines and stresses he had over the years due at least in part to his military service, let me say from a standpoint of having several friends and acquaintances with those issues that I indirectly understand what he and the family went through afterwards. I sincerely pray he's enjoying the peace and tranquility he's deserved for so long, moreso, a sincere thanks for you having allowed him to share his alter-egos and self through this incredible Theatre Of The Mind.

He took his first and only parachute jump. It was the top thrill of his life, the parachute jump. And the second time we saw Raymond was just recently, earlier this year...at Ed and Kay in Benton. He and Dave Elwick, KARN radio personality, were doing the Thursdays show there. One of the things I remember is his make believe restaurant called "road kill cafe" and the menu was right off the road. Uncle Brother was hilarious at best and tedious at worst and so much more in between. He will sorely be missed by so many. Family, friends, and listeners have had the pleasure of his warped sense of humor, his serious nature, and the love of so many things. I remember him coming to my mothers (Bernardine) for a visit some years ago and we talked about so many insignificant things. He wondered why Doberman Pincers were called "pinchers" because they surely didn't pinch! (such things as that!) His wit was contagious and his love was enormous. I will miss him eventhough I haven't had the chance to see him much in the past few years. May God bless his family for their loss and know that he will be watching over them always. I love you Uncle Brother,

Dear Maxine and Family- Our very deepest sympathy to you and all the family during this time. Life without Raymond will be quieter and not near as much fun! From our earliest days together to just this past summer when we last got to escape and meet Wiggles. Raymond please watch over all of us- keep an eye on "the boy" please. Thank you for all the wonderful magic you brought to us! Much love- Andrew, Danny and Shelley

I never really had the patience to listen to talk radio until I listened to "Hot Rod Lincoln". He won me over. It was always nice to listen & smile each day as I listen to Ray. He was a cool refreshing voice in a hot and sometimes tough world. May God bless his family.

Ray was a special fellow. Worked with him at KARN back in the 80s and recently visited with him via telephone. I'll never encounter anyone more creative and talented. I know Ray is up in heaven right now handicapping the horses with his old buddy Jim Elder. Thank you, Ray, for all the laughs. You're one of a kind. God bless your memory, my friend. Ray's wife and family are in my prayers.

Maxine, I am so sorry for your loss. I will miss Ray's laugh, his kindness, and his friendly voice on the other end of the phone line when he would surprise me once in a blue moon with a "hello beautiful!" Ray was indeed a beautiful soul and all of us who knew Ray will miss him. Susie Wiggins

I'll sure miss Ray. We had lunch a few months ago at Carino's in North Little Rock and he was full of energy. Joking, lots of one-liners, always a kidder. I really respected Ray as a legendary Radio man and he was always kind and helpful to me. Here's to Ray, "Thanks for bringing so many smiles to our faces."

Oh sweet baby Ray... how much I am going to miss you. You never failed to bring a smile to my face and a jolly laugh. I loved being your graphic artist and getting those tip sheets just right for you. I know come January it will be bittersweet not being able to see you walk through that door with them in your hand. I have no doubt in my heart that you are *entertaining* the angel's in heaven. Thank you my friend for showing us your true heart. I miss you already but you will be forever in my heart. Byecicle! :D

Ray's broadcats brightened many a morning for me, but getting to know him and appreciate his love for others was a greater pleasure. My condolences to his family and anyone else who feels sadness at the loss of a truly original, and caring, person.

A great man and a good friend. I am honored to have known him. A few years ago, Ray and Maxine had a "Birthday" party to celebrate his transplant, and to salute Dwayne Compton's gift to him. In attendance, I saw a Oaklawn jockey elbow-to-elbow with the Lt. Governor, both sharing time with Ray. It was a moment of revelation that Ray's appeal and good humor brought people together from all walks of life. As Ray always admonished at the end of his show, I hope I did something useful today. And Ray, I know you and James Harwood are enjoying a big bowl of chili right now. Via con Dios 'Sweet Baby' Ray.

He made a huge impact on my life. He was a major influence during my early years in the radio business at KAAY and we stayed in touch up until just a few years ago. He knew my brother Steve Payne, who works at KTHV Channel 11. He was one of the most cantankerous and talented people I have ever met. I did the overnight show and he would come in and replace me at 6AM. I would stick around and help him, usually go get some McDonalds breakfast for us. You didn't want to be on his bad side. I once saw him throw a typewriter down a hallway at KAAY in a fit of rage. Thanks for everything, Ray. You will be dearly missed. Don Payne, Radio -One of Indianapolis
