of Conway, AR

June 21, 1921 - October 1, 2017

John Green, age 96, of Conway, passed away on October 1, 2017, at Conway Regional due to complications from a fall. John was born on June 21, 1921, to Wade Preston Green and Marguerite Honeycutt Green in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his wife Viva Lucille Pounders Green, his brother Sterling Green of Camden, and his sister Marguerite Metsker of Hendersonville, Tennessee.

He is survived by Mary Lynda Barham (Charles) of Conway, Kathleen Rogers (Dan) of Forney, Texas, Jennifer Leigh Johnson (Arthur) of Little Rock, and John Stacy Green (Monica) of Enola.
He is also survived by the following grandchildren: Ed Linck (Mariana) of Conway, Ike Preston Linck of Conway, Luke Daniel Rogers (Jennifer) of Tucson AZ, Grant Jonathan Rogers (Taryn) of Wichita Falls TX, Stacy Lucille Greenlaw of Hot Springs, John Stacy Green Jr. of Maumelle, Matthew Curtis of Little Rock, Racheal Johnson of Jacksonville, Rose Johnson of Sherwood, and Kristen Hernandez (Heriberto) of Jacksonville. John was very proud of his 18 great grandchildren. He will also be missed by a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

John served in the Army during World War II, spending 21 months in Europe. He was in England, France, Holland and Germany. When the war ended, he returned to Little Rock and took a civil service job where he met Lucy. After a brief courtship, they married, resigned their jobs and moved to Monticello for John to start college using the GI Bill. He transferred the next year to the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville and graduated with a BS in Agriculture in 1950.

John and Lucy spent the next 20 years in England, Arkansas, where he taught Veterans, High School Agri, and chemistry for 3 years. He then was promoted to be the Principal of England High School and he began working on his Masters Degree in Education Administration from U of A. He completed this degree in 1960. In 1970, John was promoted to Superintendent of the England School District. After 2 years, he accepted a job as supervisor of the Veterans Approving Agency in the State Dept of Education in Little Rock. He worked there until he retired in 1983.

John and Lucy moved from England to Conway in 1976. John loved having enough land for a big garden. He grew the best tomatoes and blackberries, which he loved to share with friends at Graham Chapel United Methodist Church down the road. Lucy passed away in 2012 and John spent these last 5 years helping and guiding family and friends. John spent many hours in daily prayer, Bible study, visiting and watching old movies.

Services will be held at Roller-McNutt Funeral Home on October 6, 2017, at 3:00pm with interment at Crestlawn Memorial Park at 4:30pm. This will be followed by a reception at Graham Chapel United Methodist Church just across Highway 64. Visitation will be from 6pm to 8pm Thursday at the funeral home. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 901 N University Ave, Little Rock, AR 72207 or the Gideon's International, P. O. Box 1362, Conway, AR 72033.

So sorry for your loss. It is a blessing to have the example of almost 100 years of wisdom and life experience to draw from in your family. I celebrate with you a life well lived and accomplishments that will never find their way into an obituary, but have found their way into the hearts of those who were loved.

Mr. Green was the greatest inspiration in my life. He was my Agri Teacher for three years from grades 9-11, 1953-1955. He was always gentle, yet could be stern when the need arose. He just naturally made you want to be your best in order to maintain his respect.
I am sure he was as good a Husband and Father as he was a teacher, and his family will miss him greatly.

Mr. Green was my favorite Principal and Superintendent. I always admired and respected him because of his fairness and integrity. He had a sly and kind wit and I was often left wondering what he meant.

After I got my first three "licks", I didn't have to wonder any more.

I wish I had known about his military service and his association with the AR Dept. of Veteran affairs. We would have had a great conversation.

We extend our sincerest condolences to his wonderful family. He is truly one of the Greatest Generation and we were lucky to have his wisdom and guidance. May God bless.

Mr. Green was my principal from 1962 till May 24th 1968 at Morse High School better known as England High School. I always looked up to Mr. Green as a father figure. He was only 6 months older than my dad. I graduated with his oldest daughter in 1968 and got better acquainted with Kathy in recent years due to a reunion and social media.
Mr. Green was a big reason that my 6 years at EHS was so successful. He will always have a special place in my heart. As a side note, his wife's first name of Lucy is also my mother's name. I still have her to enjoy in person whenever I am back in Arkansas.
Condolences and blessings to the Green family. Such a great Legacy that Mr. Green passed on to us all.

We were so sorry to learn of John's passing. John and Lucy were such friends to us since we joined them in the work of the Gideons many years ago. He was one of the kindest men we have ever known and such a faithful servant and prayer warrior.

We grieve with you at your loss, but await with renewed eagerness that certain reunion we shall have with him in the clouds when we meet the Lord in the air.

You are in our prayers.

In Christ's love,
Ann & Ed
