October 12, 1934 - September 20, 2017

JONESBORO - Charles M. ''Skip'' Mooney, Sr., 82, of Jonesboro left this world on Wednesday, September 20, 2017. He was a lifelong resident of the community.
Skip Sr. was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Estelle Dowdy and stepfather, John E. Dowdy, of Jonesboro. He lost his wife of 55 years, Mary Carolyn (Witcher) Mooney, in 2011.
He is survived by his daughter, Danon Carolyn Fisher and his sons, Charles ''Skip'' Mooney, Jr. and Michael Mooney; three grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth Baber (Barrett) of Franklin TN, Charles ''Chase'' Mooney, III and Jordan Meador (Ray) of Jonesboro and three great grandchildren, Brooks Marion Baber, Elliott Elizabeth Baber and Samuel Ray (Rhys) Meador, III.
Skip Sr. was a graduate of Jonesboro High School, and Arkansas State College, class of 1956. He was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. He graduated with a ROTC commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army and married Mary Carolyn before moving to Fort Carson in Colorado Springs. After returning to Arkansas, he attended the University of Arkansas School of Law in Fayetteville and earned a Degree of Bachelor of Laws and he was admitted to the Arkansas Bar in 1961. That year, he started his legal career as an associate with attorney, James E. McDaniel, before being elected as the City Attorney for Jonesboro for two terms. He served as President of the Craighead County Bar Association in 1967. He was issued a Degree of Juris Doctor from the University of Arkansas in 1969 and he served as the President of the Lions Club of Jonesboro from 1970 to 71. He had been in private practice for 56 years, becoming a prominent Arkansas lawyer while building a legacy for his family. He was licensed to practice in all Arkansas state courts, the Arkansas Federal District Courts and the U.S. Court of Appeals, Eighth Circuit. During his career he was a law partner in Ward & Mooney, Mooney & Boone and in 1999 he and his son, Skip Jr., established the Mooney Law Firm, P.A., a third generation litigation firm, where he worked until his recent demise.
Skip Sr. represented thousands of families and businesses as well as mentored many attorneys in Northeast Arkansas. The help he had received from others in establishing his own career was a great lesson that he never forgot and he paid it forward many times. He was respected by his peers in his profession throughout the state of Arkansas and he was loved by so many as a caring person. He was a member of the Craighead County Bar Association, the Arkansas Bar Association and he had been an Arkansas Bar Foundation Sustaining Fellow since 2001.
Skip Sr. was a great son, father and grandfather who provided substantial support and love for his family. He was so admired and loved by his family that one son and both of his granddaughters chose to follow in his legal footsteps. He exemplified all that a family could ask for in a family leader. He loved interacting with people and was known to most of his childhood friends as ''Skippy''. He had a way of making everybody around him feel special and he enjoyed socializing at the Craighead County Courthouse, the Jonesboro Country Club and the Elks Lodge. His favorite pastime sport was horse racing and he spent many seasons with his friends at the Oaklawn Jockey Club.
A private family burial will be held at Keller's Chapel Cemetery.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 26, 2017, in the Atrium at the First United Methodist Church of Jonesboro starting at 11:00 a.m. followed by a memorial service at 1:00 p.m. in the sanctuary.

Pallbearers serving are Chase Mooney, Ray Meador, Barrett Baber, Bill Sims, Kent Arnold and Bill Bristow. Honorary pallbearers are the members of the Craighead County Bar Association.

John Miles, senior pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Jonesboro, will be the celebrant.
The family requests that lasting memorials be made to the Mary Mooney Memorial Scholarship c/o Out of the Dark Inc., 818 E Matthews Ave, Jonesboro AR 72401.

My sincere condolences to the family of "Skip." I first met Skip in 1961 when he was in law practice with Jim McDaniel. From the first I liked him as a person: through the years I grew to like him even more and respect him, not only as an attorney, but as a person. I also liked his wife, Mary, as a person. Both were sincere in their respecting other people. Skip always had a smile and a "glad to see you attitude! He will be missed by all who knew him.

So sorry to learn of Skip's death. I always admired him and was so impressed with him all the way back to his days as city attorney and afterwards when he was representing people who had issues before the council. He was brilliant and will be sorely missed. I'm in Texas and won't be there for his service, but know my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I'm so sorry to hear of Skip’s passing. Loosing a loved one is never easy. I lost my dad in 2010, and my mom in 2012. After my losses, reading Revelation 21:3,4 gave me real comfort. It says: And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away. I hope reading these verses also give you comfort during this difficult time. GW
