Barbara Smith

of Greenbrier, AR

August 29, 1938 - December 16, 2016

Barbara Smith 78, of Greenbrier, Arkansas passed away Friday, December 16, 2016. She was born August 29, 1938 in Memphis, Tennessee to the late George and Kitty Sue (West) Bond.

She and her late husband, William Frank Smith, had lived in several places including Tennessee and Louisiana; however, they settled in Greenbrier, AR more than 25 years ago, after raising their family in Benton, AR. Their three boys, Evan, Eric, and Kurt were moving out. It was time for new adventures: small farm, small town, and horse racing.
She was the type of woman that ''walked the talk'' and loved many people including her family, co-workers, peers, and church. You always knew what she thought and knew where you stood with her. Though you could easily complement her for her commitments and generosity and try to give her credit for a soft heart, that was never the goal, it was just a way of life. To this day, you can easily find evidence of her thinking about the ways she could help someone over a ''hump'' or help someone with a challenge.
She loved working for the state of Arkansas as a Director of Computing Services and she loved working with the people in her department; however, her heart was always on the farm with Frank, with both as one, focused on racing and taking care of thoroughbreds as well as growing their own Bermuda hay for their horses. Simply put, the life of a small farm fit her like a glove and the farm gave her a way to give homes to animals like many of us can't. If the more than 50 animals including horses and dogs could talk and tell you, they would say Barbara Smith was the best thing that happened to them.

In 1995, after commuting more than 25 years from Greenbrier, AR to Little Rock, AR, she retired from the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department. She and Frank always mentioned the joy of living in Greenbrier and living on the farm, on their terms, without distractions, after retirement. She felt blessed and often said the neighbors are great, the church is great and the town is great.

She is survived by her sons, Kurt Larkin Smith (Allison Dawn), Eric Franklin Smith (Gayla Frances), and Evan Douglas York Bell (Mellissa Holloway); eleven grandchildren, Daniel Christopher Bell, Kendra Bell, Sarah Bell, Eric Scott Smith, Ashley Larkin Smith, Austin Trent Smith, Landon Willmuth, Zachary Willmuth, Juneau Smith, Ethan Smith, Abigail Smith, four great grandchildren, Stephen Smith, Hallie Smith, Jacob Henry Swan, Ethan Jackson Swan; brothers, Stanton Bond (Cindy) and George Bond (Linda); nieces and nephews; three retired race horses (Sal, Stuts and Dixie) and 2 dogs (Coco and Little Bit).

Both Frank and Barbara felt responsible for all animals and often donated to organization with similar missions, Barbara was very specific about her request that memorial gifts go to JTR/Faulkner County SPCA, 4 Gail Lane, Conway AR 72034, memo ''To Lydia Hick with love from Barbara Smith''. They are a local ''No Kill Shelter'' that provides medical care, shelter and re-homing for canines and equine that have been abused or abandoned

Barbara was my friend for 30+ years. She enjoyed the simple pleasures of life--a good movie, watching chickens doing their antics in the yard, joining me at my quilt club and watching us quilt, slumming around in "junktique" shops. She and I became even closer after our husbands passed away one year apart. We went to Branson, saw Elvis' beloved Graceland, and took many day trips together. She was loyal and kind. Barbara had no hesitation about telling you just what she thought on any subject, so you never had to guess where you stood with her. She was highly intelligent but so humble. I loved her like a sister and will miss her terribly. I send my condolences to her family and friends as we all endure the grieving process. God bless.
