Betty Jean Courtway

of Conway, AR

February 5, 2016

Noted birdwatcher and community servant Betty Jean (Sugg) Courtway departed this life on Friday February 5, 2016 at the age of 86. She was born on February 27, 1929 in Memphis TN, the oldest child and only daughter of Thomas L. and Lona L. Sugg. Her father was employed by the Missouri Pacific Railroad, and the family moved numerous times before settling in Wynne AR where she graduated from Wynne High School in 1947.

Betty attended St. Joseph School of Nursing in Memphis for one year, returning home to care for her younger brothers following the death of her mother.
In 1948 Betty married Bob Courtway and she joined him in Conway where they both attended Arkansas State Teachers College. While at ASTC she played on the tennis team and developed her lifelong love of the sport. Although the Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference did not formally recognize women's tennis at the time, she was a teammate on the winning women's doubles team in 1949 and the singles champion in 1950.

Bob graduates from ASTC in 1950 and began his first coaching job at Holly Grove and Betty also taught in the school district there. During their four years there, her oldest son tom was born.
In 1954 the family moved to Wilson, where both Bob and Betty taught in the school district. During the seven years in Wilson, three more sons were born, Bobby, John and Jeff.

In 1961 the family moved back to Conway, where Bob was hired as the Hendrix swimming coach. Moving back to Conway allowed Betty to complete her undergraduate degree in 1964. The following year saw the birth of her only daughter, Susie.

Betty began teaching kindergarten the next year and would continue until her retirement in 1993.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Ray Sugg, and her husband of 48 years, Bob.

She is survived by her five children, 14 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Survivors include Tom(Melisa) Courtway, Corey (Chelesy ) Davidson, Drew (Alicia) Courtway, Ryan (Janine) Davidson, Brad(Caity) Courtway, Robert (Myung Hee) Courtway, Jessica Courtway, Allen Courtway, John (Claudia) Courtway, Katy Courtway, Rob Courtway, Jenny Courtway, Annie Courtway, Heidi Courtway, Jeff(Brooks Anne) Courtway, Lauren Courtway, Erin (E.J.) Roussell, Colton Courtway and Susie Courtway.
She is also survived by her five brothers; Richard (Pat) Sugg of Wichita Falls, TX, Robert (Darlene) Sugg of Dyersburg, TN, Jim (Lou) Sugg of Wynne, Jack (Janet) Sugg of Jonesboro, and Ronnie (Marjorie) Sugg of Zephyrills, FL.
Betty was a member of First United Methodist Church of Conway, the Faulkner County Retired Teachers, Conway Regional Medical Center Auxiliary, Friends of the Faulkner County Library, and the Conway Civic League.

Betty loved the outdoors, birdwatching, tennis, music, gardening, and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

There will be a Memorial Celebration of her life, Thursday, February 11, 2016 at 1:30pm at the First United Methodist Church in Conway.

In lieu of flowers the family requests any donations be made to the First United Methodist Church in Conway, the Salvation Army, Hendrix College or the UCA Foundation.

Thank you for sharing your dear mother with us throughout the years. Her door was always open to Hendrix students. When we last visited, she took us on a walk through the campus and I couldn't keep up with her. An amazing woman, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. May God continue to allow her light and life flow through each of you.

To the entire Courtway family, I can only echo the sentiments sent by many, many others. But I must tell you what a wonderful friend and influence Betty has always been to me and to my family. From the time our girls were in her kindergarten classes in the late '60's, until my renewed acquaintance with her at our Hendrix exercise class, she has always amazed me with her strength and grace! I shall never forget her.

Dear Courtways,

I have been blessed to have such great memories of your mom and of the Courtway family. She was one of the kindest, caring, approachable and energetic people I have ever known.

My mother and Betty were good friends for decades and Mrs. Courtway was always at
those special events in my family’s life to celebrate, comfort and share her love with us.

Betty, Dr. Courtway and Mr. Cummings taught me how to have a more effective back hand
when playing tennis with them as a high school kid and we played many spirited hours of doubles on the old tennis courts across from Hendrix in the 70’s.

Your mom had a kind and wonderful manner of making you know that you were special and valued. She helped you understand that you could succeed even though it might not seem that way right at that time to you.

I can remember thinking just how “cool” Mrs. Courtway was when she was giving those “gifts” away.

I have respected your mom throughout my life and I will always remember her fondly.

Seems we never really know how much our actions//attitudes touch others and can make a positive impact in their lives.

Mrs. Courtway, thank you so much for taking the time to make a positive difference in mine.

I will be thinking of and praying for all of you.

The service for your mom, grandmother and sister was a lovely and true tribute to her. It was obvious that she was gracious to so many individuals that were blessed to have crossed her path. Ms. Courtway has always been one of my favorite people.
When I was going to school at UCA (working toward my Early Childhood Degree,1978), I did some observations in her kindergarten classroom. ( I was Ms. Esther M. Kershner, then). She was amazing. I have used her as an example and in "sharing" at different times over these many years. After my ECD, I went on and got my Master's in Special Education and am a special education supervisor at CHDC (41 years). This dear lady-with her ever present smile-continues to be an example/mentor/inspiration, for me.
I care.

For many years I enjoyed playing tennis with Betty as an opponent and as a partner. As time went on and it became difficult to fill out a foursome we went to concerts instead. My favorite quote of Betty's were words that came shortly after her retirement from teaching. "I have a tennis racquet, a mountain bike, and air conditioning. What more could a woman want!" That is my friend Betty.
My condolences to her family. I know you feel her love for the rest of your lives.

Betty Courtway was special in so many ways that it would difficult to name everything. She was my daughter's Kindergarten teacher, and Nisi just adored her. Even after Nisi was grown and a stage actress in New York, Betty would send her encouraging notes saying, " I'm so proud of you." I was told that she took that kind of interest in all of her former students. She was much loved and respected by all who knew her. My prayers are now with her loved ones.

She was my kindergarten teacher first. She then became a life long friend who showed me how to live with an abundant heart. She taught by example. Whenever I came home for a visit, it was a priority to spend time with Mrs. Courtway. Her spirit was always bright and welcoming. Every memory I have of her is filled with this supportive and positive energy she exuded. From taking nature walks to see the sheep when I was five years of age with our class at Ellen Smith Elementary, to having her stumble upon me doing my high school homework outside (because she she instilled in me a love for the outdoors) as she was out for a walk around Conway, to bringing my husband by to meet her seven years ago and having him say,
"You're right, she's so special.", to my last visit where she held my baby boy Owen at 4months old and we laughed and shared joy together. She welcomed all. She appreciated the natural and true beauty of this world. She was rare and I loved her.

Forty three years ago I arrived from across the world at Hendrix College. Two of the first people to meet me were the Courtway's : Bob and Betty. The statement was I believe : Our House is your House. There started my "second family". That relationship never died. Betty Courtway was a VERY special lady in my life and ultimately that of my family. We loved her dearly and it was awesome that she could come to our Country to spend time with us in 2000. We mourn for her but take strength from the knowledge she is reunited with Bob. I see her in that special place with her Tennis racquet under her arm and a pair of Binoculars at the ready. Rest in Peace special Lady, you will never be forgotten by your New Zealand family. In Betty, a more gracious competitor, you will never find- but a true competitor- that wide shot that pulled you off the court and into the drapery of the Mabee Center...she owned that shot!

I have had the honor to teach many of her grandchildren, so I have kept up with her through their eyes, and they ADORED her! God blessed us all so much by putting Mrs. Courtway in our lives. My deepest sympathies to all of her family!

Mrs. Courtway touched my life over 30 years ago as a kindergartener in her class at Ellen Smith. She continued to be a blessing to me over the years, as she always remembered me, and by name! She remains my favorite teacher of all time, and the news of her passing is a great loss to this world. My sincerest condolences to the family of this precious soul. Love and prayers to you all.
