Lugean Lester ChilcoteI am a Veteran.

of Little Rock, AR

January 14, 1929 - September 1, 2015

LUGEAN L. CHILCOTE, 86 of Little Rock finished his Round on September 1, 2015. He was born on January 14, 1929 in Oklahoma City to the late Mark and Myrita Chilcote. Raised in Little Rock, he played baseball at Lamar Porter and graduated from Little Rock High in 1946. Lugean graduated from the University of Arkansas' newly established Architecture Program in 1951 and was recognized as the Distinguished Military Graduate Air Force ROTC. As a Korean War Veteran, he served 13 years in active and reserve duty in the United States Air Force, retiring as a Captain in the Air Research and Development Command. Lugean married the love of his life, Clara Dudis, on December 18, 1953.

Lugean retired as President and Chief Executive Officer of Blass Chilcote Carter Gaskin Bogart & Norcross Architects in 1999. He was responsible for many of the firm's well-known buildings and major projects including: Baptist Medical Center; University of Arkansas Medical Sciences; Arkansas Children's Hospital; the Statehouse Convention Center; and numerous area private residences. Lugean was inducted into the American Institute of Architects College of Fellows and received the E. Fay Jones Gold Medal, named for his long-time friend, classmate and colleague. He served the profession as President of Arkansas AIA Chapter; Director of the National AIA Board; and chaired or served on many national or regional AIA committees.

Lugean used his talents for many public service agencies, foundations and civic organizations. He served the Arkansas Community Foundation as Director, Treasurer, Advisory Board member and was First Recipient of the ACF Annual Meritorious Service Award. He served as Director of the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame. An avid supporter of the Boy Scouts of America, he served as Vice-President of the Quapaw Area Council, Pioneer District Chairman and Scoutmaster. He completed Wood Badge Training, received the Pioneer District Award of Merit, the Quapaw Area Council Silver Beaver Award, and still found the time and energy to raise four Eagle Scout sons.

He was a car enthusiast, pool shark, small repair tinkerer, and an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending days on the lake. But mostly he loved to golf with family and friends, assisted with Hot Springs Physically Challenged
Golfers Association and was always striving for the perfect golf shot. He was a true servant, leader, loyal man, a great friend, and an excellent husband and father whom we will sorely miss and be forever grateful.

Lugean was a lifelong member of First Christian Church and shared his faith with family and friends. He served as Deacon, Elder, youth sponsor, Trustee, Chairman of Board and Architect for the current campus. He was proceeded in death by his mother, father, son David and daughter-in-law Pam. He is survived by Clara, wife of 61 years; sons Martin, Fred (Mary Lou), Brad (Jeanine); and grandchildren Sarah (Scott), Allison, Mary Elizabeth, David, Remy and Dylan.

A visitation and Final Tee Time will be Thursday, September 3 from 6:00-8:00 P.M. at First Christian Church in Little Rock. A celebration of life is planned 10:00 A.M., Friday, September 4 at the church. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Little Rock. I wish to express my deep sympathy for the loss to Lugean's wonderful family...my prayers go out to you. I first met Lugean at the firm of Earhart, Eichenbaum, Rauch & Blass, in 1963 at the start of my career, and always had great respect and admiration for him. Lugean impressed me with daily demonstrations of his architectural savvy, ethics and ability to influence people and attain their best, always making them feel important. He will be sorely missed by all that were privileged to know him.

I will miss Lugean's great smile any time we greeted each other. He was a great leader of his profession and truly loved being involved in all things related to architecture and building. He always talked about his family with a radiant smile. He loved golf as much as anyone I've ever known. Going on long ago golf trips with him and working on the architect-engineer MOU with him are times I will not forget. My prayers are with each of you who loved and will miss him. May God bless you.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Clara and the Chilcote family. We also had the wonderful pleasure of first meeting Lugean in 1999, as our AIA National Board class took office. We shared many trips across the continent in that role for the following three years.

Lugean was a warm and thoughtful man, who made a point of staying in touch in the years since.

May his memory be eternal.
