Bethel Beatrice Spencer

of Jonesboro, AR

July 8, 1943 - February 19, 2015

Bethel Whitehurst Spencer, loving and devoted wife and mother, aged 71, of Jonesboro, peacefully transitioned from her earthly home to her heavenly home with her loving family by her side Thursday, February 19, 2015 following a lengthy illness. Bethel was born July 8, 1943 in Grubbs, AR to Harmon Whitehurst and the late Evelyn Ballard Whitehurst Mayes.

Bethel leaves behind to mourn her memory, her husband of 51 years, Amos Spencer of the home; children, Victor and Shelly Spencer of Collierville, TN and Preston Spencer of Jonesboro; several grandchildren whom she adored, Christopher, Leah, and Clayton Spencer of Collierville, Valerie and Shane Spencer of Jonesboro; a sister, Reba Peifer of Harrisburg; and a brother, Yarnell Whitehurst of Jonesboro.

Bethel was preceded in death by her mother, Evelyn Mayes; step-father, Junior Mayes; and a brother, Hershel Whitehurst.

Bethel loved spoiling her grandchildren, gardening, traveling, singing, eating out with family and friends, catching up with family and friends on Facebook, and cuddling with her special little ''fur babies'', Grizzly and Daisy.

Bethel had a positive, uplifting impact on all who knew her and loved her. She had an enormous heart, a joyful and forgiving spirit, and an unending love for the Lord, her family and her friends. We were blessed to be loved by her and to have her in our lives. We look forward to a joyous reunion with her someday. But until that time, we will hang on to the special memories and the love we have for her.

Services are scheduled for 1 pm Saturday at Roller-Farmers Union Funeral Home, 1900 West Washington Avenue in Jonesboro with Mark Spencer and Allen Ashlock officiating.

Visitation will begin at 11 am until the time of service.

The family would like to thank the doctors and nursing staff of Baptist Hospital in Memphis for their compassionate care, as well as the staff of NEA Baptist Clinic Dialysis Center.

Donations can be made to Paragould Children's Homes, the American Diabetes Association or to the charity of your choice.

Bethel was a dear friend from our days in high school and I always enjoyed the opportunity to visit with her in person, by phone or on Facebook. I am so sad that she has left us so soon, but I know she is with the Lord and no longer in pain and that is comforting. I so wanted to attend her services and planned to, however, I will not be able to because of weather related reasons. I will be there in heart and mind. My prayers are with Amos, Victor, Preston, the grandchildren and the rest of her family.

Our deepest sympathy is extended to family. She was a caring and loving Christian. I will miss the informative e-mails she would send. May God be with Amos and all family members. She will be missed by all who knows her.

Sure loved Mrs. B! She was a special kind of person. Her and I had a lot of conversation of just random things when we used to go out and visit her and the family. She had a heart of love & never did I hear her talk bad if anyone. She loved her family more than life itself and Mr. Amos. I can still remember when we would be there and he would be gone to the cabin up in the hills and he never failed to call and check on her and always before they would hang up she would blow him a kiss on the phone and tell him she loved him. Sure will miss her. She loved Facebook & playing her games on the computer. I think her favorite most of all was wheel of fortune if I remember right. She use to always tell me how pretty my hair was even on a windy day & would go on about how I could do many things with it. HA! I Sure will miss her. My thoughts are with the Spencer family in the coming days ahead. She will always hold a special & dear place in my heart.

Words come hard for me at this time; so I go to the Bible to find the perfect ones to help me describe Bethel. Proverbs 31:10--31. I feel blessed to have known her!
