To say that sadness and grief accompany the news I received at the news of David's passing, seems to do little to how I know he would have wanted to be remembered. I have looked over all our old band stuff from the 70's and early 80's and found David's characteristic "Hello!" scrawled in my senior yearbook with him also saying that he would see me at the future reunions. We met each other in the past 20-plus years at various times and share stories of the old and then-present days. I do look forward to the time I see him again..at the next great reunion..

My sister Jennifer forwarded the news to me in El Salvador just a few days ago. My deepest sympathies to his family, his friends, and his students. It is never the quantity of life that marks a great man but the quality of that life. David was a man of great quality. He will live on, as we all will, in the memories of those lives we have come in contact with. We now add him to the list of those we are eager to see again one day. I'm sure he and Mr. Brown are having a grand time while waiting for us! Blessings of peace to David's family and comfort in the knowledge that although the quantity of his life was small the quality was enormous.

There are no words to express the sadness that one feels at times like this. It is my opinion that you can only express it in music, perhaps. David Elliott is deserving of his requiem. It has been many years since our Tau Beta Sigma and Kappa Kappa Psi days at UCA. However, some time ago, I ran into David and it was like no time had passed at all. A great light has been extinguished and he will be greatly missed. It takes an incredible person to teach music in the way that he did, and to touch the lives of young people. In that respect, he will remain with us always. My thoughts and prayers are with David's family and friends and students. I feel very privileged to have literally grown up with David from 3rd grade all the way through college. David was a fixture at a lot of Boone family gatherings and he meant a great deal to me and my family. I will always treasure the memories I have of trips to Clear Lake, Trivial Pursuit marathons, that Green Dodge Dart. I guess if it weren't for David, we never would have been able to go anywhere. David was one of those rare people who knew a long time ago what he wanted to do with his life and he made it happen. And in doing so touched a great number of lives. My thoughs are with Jeff, Jim, Ohlene & all their families.

I was saddened to get a call today to hear about one of my friend, Daivd's death. I will always remember his humor and yes that green dodge dart and his help to get me to go to U.C.A. I was blessed to see him around the first of June and introduced my wife and son to him. It was like it was part of God's plan to place him in our presence after several years without hearing from him. He will be missed greaterly and remembered forever.

David has been my son's inspiration and teacher for the past 3 years as we made our weekly journey from Mtn View to Heber Springs. How to you console a 14 yr old who has just suffered one of his first major life experiences. David, you will be missed more than you can ever know. We love you.

I am a former student of Mr. Elliot's from Southwest Middle School in Searcy in the mid 1990's. Mr. E helped me to find my true passion in life, my clarinet. And even when I had to move to Bald Knob schools, he still kept up with my progression throughout my years there. I went to to Arkansas State on a band scholarship....and Mr. Elliot, I owe it all to you. God apparently needed you for something up in Heaven. I can only imagine the day where we'll all meet again....

I got to know David Elliott in the early 1980s as a fellow UCA Band member and friend -- and at marathon Trivial Pursuit sessions at John Dieckmann's old apartment on Deer Street in Conway. These are some of the qualities I came to admire in David: Talent. Commitment. Dedication. Ability to cut to the heart of the matter, and say things that needed saying. An ability, as a leader, to do what needed doing. A willingness to do anything he could for a friend. And above all else, a love of the music. We will miss him terribly, and our thoughts are with his family.

David taught with me at Searcy Junior High . All the years he was there I considered him to be a very hard working person who wanted to learn to be more than just a teacher, but cared for his students on a personal level. He would hang out in the teachers lounge sometimes with all us women who were old enough to be his parents and just smile and sometimes blush at the conversations. He never did leave and one day I asked him if we embarassed him too much and his reply was ,"it is really pretty educational!" I went on the band trip to Denver Colorado as I had a daughter in the high school band and one who was a freshman in college who was asked to go along to help make it a 100 piece band. David had just finished his first year with us. He asked me one night if I would teach him and some of the students some table etiquetee as they were not sure which silverware to use when several were on the table. The hotel we were staying in had great breakfasts with the tables already set so a group of students, David and I had a real lesson. It was great fun and "educational". One day David came to me all excited and showed me part of a family tree that Tommy Caple was putting together on the Caple family. He had found my name and I think my daughters, Kim and Suzanne, in it. My maternal great grandparents were Caples from Benton and we felt like kinfolks for real after learning this. My great grandparents were Arthur & Molly grandparents. I know you will all miss your little brother as we who have met him along the way. God be with you as you go through your healing and remember all the wonderful memories you hold for him. Linda Mead Fullerton

I was stunned to hear of David's death. The last time I saw David was at our ten year reunion. David was happy about being a band director, and we were sitting around with our former band director - Mr. Alexander talking about old times. I remember David being "on top of the world" talking about his career. I am glad David wound up doing the job he loved, I know he worked hard all his life to get there. I am glad I knew David and know he is jammin in heaven.

He helped me research other states information as well to provide an accurate assessment of the different states procedures, he emailed me lots and lots of helpful information. We talked to David from time to time throughout the years and we kept up with him through other friends as well. Mr. Elliott was truly a "one-of-a-kind" treasure, not only musically, but also, as a caring and compassionate friend, guide, and mentor to his students. I am sure many present and future band directors remember him for the encouragement and support that he provided, above and beyond the call of duty, to help them achieve their goals. I will remember you, his family, in my prayers. The Lord will give you strength and comfort to make it through this very sad time. May God bless each of you. Charlene Rippy

I was in band with David at UCA years ago. My children are now in band, and David was my daughter's director at band camp. I remember vividly David as a young pledge in the band fraternity. He was so excited about life and in love with music. He contributed to my enjoyment of band in those days and to my daughter’s love of it years later. My family’s prayers are with his family, and my thoughts are with the many he touched during his short time with us.

His love of the history of school music in our state and his ability to use the internet for communication led to the ASBOA website that we all take so much for granted. Thank you David for bringing us closer together and making us the big family that we have become. I met mr. Elliott my 8th grade year. It was his first year to be the Heber Springs Junior High Director and my first year as Junior High Drum Major! I also had the pleasure of spending the next four years in High School Band with him while he helped Ms. Jernigan. In the short five years I knew him he taught me to appreciate music and I realized how much he enjoyed teaching us. I would also like to thank Mr. Elliott for helping me carry my ladder out on the field every football game during High School. I was lucky to get to spend almost every day with him and i will miss him greatly. To his family- You have my prayers!

Well first of all, Mr. Elliott will be greatly missed by his students, friends, and family. I personally miss him very very much. He was my band director for two years. He was an awesome teacher, I don't think it fit to only call him a teacher I, as well as his many students, would call him a friend. I have known him my entire life, I grew up calling him Mr. David. He was like one of our family members. I remember going to ABA with my daddy and seeing him there and him giving me a HUGE hug!! Then when I got into middle school he became my band director. He taught me how to play the clarinet and for that millions of thanks go out to him. He gave me the gift of music, a wonderful gift may I add, but the greatest gift Mr. David ever gave anyone was the gift of knowing him and becoming friends with him. He cared about his students on a professional and personal level, he always asked us how we were and if we needed anything. This tragedy lays heavy on my heart and on the heart of many of you. Mr. David Elliott will be missed by me, my family, his friends and colleagues, and the entire town of Heber Springs.~Lauren Elizabeth Ratliff

I first met David in 1982 at UCA. He was a bundle of nerves so Homer Brown assigned David to me and Robbie Harkrider as our "project". Oh how David "dreaded" sax quartet rehearsals. We began our "character development" not realizing that our good-natured kidding and ribbing would develop into 20+ years of professional and personal friendship. David was the consummate professional educator, always wanting to better himself for the sake of his students. And then to have David as my daughter Lauren's band director was such a blessing. He was a fine and caring teacher whom she misses beyond measure. I will miss David as a fellow professional, friend, and teacher to the students of Heber Springs. Robin Ratliff
