John D. Story, 88, of Evening Shade died Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at White River Medical Center.

He was a graduate of Cave City High School. He was a veteran of the Navy and the Air Force and served during World War II and the Korean Conflict. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was a naval Seabee for two years. He then re-enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he served for 22 years before retiring. After his military service, he was a security guard for several local businesses until his final retirement in 1994.

He enjoyed raising cattle, spending time with his friends at the Flash Market coffee shop in Cave City and being with his grandchildren. He was a member of the Evening Shade VFW.

Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Ruth Story of Evening Shade; three sons, Doug Story of Dallas, TX, Scott Story of Washington State, Ron Rush of Avon Park, FL; three daughters, Debra Medlock, Samantha Story Huckabee, and Donna Story all of Evening Shade; seventeen grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; one brother, Gary Story of Batesville; four sisters, Mary Jo Bowman of North Little Rock, AR, Barbara Smith of Fall Brook, CA, Carolyn Senterfitt of Arizona, Helen Francis Brandt of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Pallbearers will be Doyan Huckabee, Sterling Stowers, Spencer Stowers, Samuel Stowers, Jerry Medlock, and Richard Stowers. Honorary pallbearers are Norman Girtman, Greg Medlock, Michael Galloway, Zachary Huckabee and Nathan Huckabee.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 29, 2014 at the Roller-Crouch-McGee Funeral Home Chapel in Cave City with Robert Hutchison officiating. Burial will follow at Sharp Cemetery in Evening Shade.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
