August 11, 1914 - July 6, 2014

David E. Sullenberger, 99, of Little Rock went home to be with his Lord on July 6, 2014.
He was born in Pine Bluff, Arkansas on August 11, 1914 to Ed and Ida Sullenberger.

The family moved to Camden where he grew up, finished high school and started Hendrix College. He attended college one year and like many during the depression, had to leave school and go to work. In 1936 he returned to college, attending the University of Oklahoma, where he earned his degree in chemical engineering. World War II started, and after graduating he joined the Army Air Force and served in England and France as a communications officer from 1942 to 1945. He met and married his wife Anna Mary Mitchell before going overseas. They were married for 43 years. In 1945 he went to work for Arkansas Fuel Oil, a subsidiary of Arkla Gas. In 1960 he was promoted to Vice President of Arkla Chemical Corp. by Mr. Witt Stephens. He retired from Arkla in 1979 after 34 years of service. Shortly after his retirement he returned to work doing oil and gas research at ARKOMA for Mr. Jerry Jones. In his ''second retirement'' he and Anna enjoyed leisure time fishing at the lake in Hot Springs.

He loved golf and enjoyed playing with family and friends well into his 90's.He was a faithful member of Asbury United Methodist Church for over 25 years and enjoyed singing in the choir until he was 88 years old.

He was predeceased by his wife, Anna Mary, parents Ed and Ida Sullenberger, three brothers, Maurice, Neil, and A. G. Sullenberger and two sisters, Jo Unstead and Mary Emma Hess. David is survived by his sister, Betty Jagoditsh of Hot Springs, daughter, Patricia Shoemaker of Little Rock,
two grandchildren, Mark (Amanda) Shoemaker and Ashley Mullins of Little Rock, three great-grandchildren, Luke Shoemaker of Bauxite, Ben and Merrit Shoemaker of Little Rock and many special nieces and nephews.

A special thank you to Arkansas Hospice, Nurses and CNA's at Valley Ranch Nursing and Rehab who took care of Dad. A thank you to Dee Takasaki, D.O.N. and Nancy Perritt with Care Link. A special thank you to Rene' Cox and Willie Mae Wade of Valley Ranch for their kindness in words and deeds. God bless my family, friends and Valley Ranch buddies, Beth and Charlie Haynie and Ruth and Bill Eldridge for being with me through this journey with my Dad.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held Monday, August 11, 6:00 p.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church, 1700 Napa Valley Dr., Little Rock. Visitation will be after the service.

Dear Patty
Your Dad was such a kind man. He was a wonderful neighbor to Billy and Ima and I always loved his wave when he was in his yard! My heart aches for you during this sad time of loss but my oh my what a long, accomplished life he had! I know these last several years have been so hard for both you and your Dad but now he is at rest and peace and in time you and your family will be too. God bless you.

What a wonderful man Charlie and I got to know during the years at Valley Ranch. Singing with David was a highlight I won't soon forget. Such an intelligent, kind, amazing man and friend to many. We miss him as each day unfolds as do others who had the privilege of knowing him. David was blessed having such a caring daughter, Patty, who was by his side for many, many years.

Uncle Ed was a wonderful man of integrity, service, and thoughtfulness. He was very bright and enjoyed keeping up with current issues and all of us. He served his family with love and excellence. I am thankful for him, and I'll miss him lots.

Patti, I know you were so diligent in making sure your Dad was cared for in these last couple of years. Your work is over now and you can be sure that he appreciated all you did. Not many get to make it to 99 years without the love and care of their family. God bless you and your family at this difficult time.
