Mary Eunice Wells

of Osceola, AR

January 2, 2013

Mary Eunice Wells died on Wednesday, January 2, 2012 at the age of 99 years, 7 months 26 days. Eunice was born on May 7, 1913 in Drew County, Arkansas. She was the daughter of Joseph Edwards and Myra Arduengo Edwards, and had three brothers and three sisters. Mrs. Wells attended the Jones School in Drew County; a one room school house containing grades 1 7. She finished High School at the Agricultural School there and later attended Monticello A. and M. now the University of Arkansas at Monticello. She also attended ASU in Jonesboro, where she received a Bachelor of Science in Education degree. Eunice's teaching career spanned more than three decades. Her first teaching job was a Shady Bend in Mississippi County. She also taught at Victoria and finished her teaching career in the Osceola Public Schools. Mrs. Wells taught most of the elementary grades at one time or another and was serving school librarian/media specialist when she retired in 1974. Following her retirement she became very active in the Osceola Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, where she was recognized in 1998 for 26 years of service. She particularly enjoyed working in the Gift Shop and making quilts for new babies. Mrs. Wells was one of the founders of Calvary Baptist Church. She was a wonderful Bible scholar and taught classes for many years. She also wrote inspirational articles for her church newsletter. Her lifelong love of history was expressed in a book she co-authored with her sister for their descendants. This is a delightful book telling of their life in rural Arkansas and the games, songs, etc. that they enjoyed as children. Mrs. Wells also wrote articles about early life in Mississippi County for the Osceola Historical Society. Eunice was preceded in death by her husband Russell William ''Pete'' Wells and one daughter, Martha Sue Wells as well as her parents, three brothers and three sisters. She will be lovingly missed by her five sons: Russell Edward ''Pete'' Wells (Sissy) of Norfork, Arkansas, Joseph Douglas Wells (Lola) of Manila, Benjamin Harold Wells (Lynda) and James Donald Wells (Shirley) of Osceola and Gerald Wells of Little Rock. Her nine grandchildren: Doug Wells (Michele) of Lyman Main, Vernon Wells (Judy) of Flippin , Kellie Wells Bomar of Little Rock, Joe Douglass Wells of Key West, FL, Cary Wells of Jackson, TN Beth Wells Profeta (Steve) of Plan, TX and Lana Wells Bill ( Michael) of White Oak, Pennsylvania , Victoria Wells Gross (Glenn) and Amanda Wells of Little Rock. Mrs. Wells is also survived by 13 great-grandchildren, 7 great great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Thank you to the family of Ms. Wells for sharing the picture of your mother and the Pink Ladies from the Osceola hosptial. My mother is on the far left top row, Jessie Nichols and she loved Ms. Wells dearly. They became great friends working together at the hospital. Ms. Wells was always so kind to everyone and especially to my mother. I am sorry to hear of your loss.

Mrs. Wells was my sunday school teacher at Calvary Baptist Church, Osceola at one time. She often quoted Palms 119: 11. "They word have I hid in my heart that I might not sin against thee." That quote often rings in my heart. She will be greatly missed by everyone. God bless all the family.

It is indeed a sad day to learn of Mrs. Wells passing away. We all fondly remember her a Calvary Baptist and her loving hugs and smiles. She was a friend to all that attended Calvary Baptist and there to greet you every Sunday morning and evening and Prayer Meeting on Wednesday night.

It was a sad day for me when I was told that Mrs. Wells had passed away. I was reading a book last week that she gave to me 37 years ago, I remember the day that she brought it to me as though it had just happened. Although Ray and I have been gone from Osceola for 33 years, it was people like Mrs. Wells that will make your call Osceola home. Whether it was Sunday or Wednesday, you knew when you went to church that Mrs. Wells would be there to greet you. She loved her Lord, her church and all those who ever attended. My life was truly blessed by knowing this wonderful Christian lady. Thank you Mrs. Wells for being such an influence on my life. Sherry Lee Adcock

Mrs Wells was a wonderful lady. She always greeted with you with a smile. Growing up at Calvary she always knew what was going on in our lives and would praise, congratulate, or comment on little things we did. I can still see her at Calvary in her special place every Sunday. She loved the church and everyone in it. She was a special lady who will be greatly missed. I bet she and my mama are hugging each other right now and talking about old times at Calvary. The Davisons' will miss you Mrs Wells.
