Leslie H. Harter

of Paris, AR

July 27, 1937 - December 10, 2012

Leslie H. ''Les'' Harter, 75 of Paris, Arkansas passed away on Monday, December 10, 2012 in Houston, Texas. He was born on July 27, 1937 in Kansas, City Kansas to his parents George and Eileen (McCarthy) Harter.

A graduate of Subiaco and Memphis State University in 1962, he was the first personnel director for LeBonheur Children's Hospital in Memphis. In Washington DC, he joined the Comptroller of the Currency to design a new compensation program. Transferring to the U.S. Postal Service Headquarters in Washington, then in Memphis, he retired in 1999 as former postmaster, councilman and mayor of Pomona Park, Florida.

A lifelong volunteer, he spearheaded the restoration of the Libertyland antique carousel. Les joined the Knights of Columbus at age 18 and was active throughout his life into retirement. Any parish he lived in benefited from his knowledge and energy. He was devoted to Subiaco and believed that his education there was a prime factor in his success as an adult. Proximity to Subiaco contributed to the 2012 decision to move to Paris, Arkansas.

Over the years one constant love was travel, always ready to pack a bag for a short or long trip. He loved woodworking and taught himself to make miniature carousels, evolving into a small business. Retirement brought time for gardening and tending his orchids. He even started a promotional business, keeping him active in the community. At this time of the year you could find him with a real, white beard, dressed in red, promising visits and toys on Christmas Eve.

Many will remember him introducing himself as, '' Les. more or less, always Les''.

Les is preceded in death by his parents, George and Eileen Harter and one sister Donna Ross.

Les is survived by his wife of 50 years Lucille ''Lu'' Harter of Paris, Arkansas; one daughter, Cyndi Harter of Paris, Arkansas; one son George Harter and wife Bridget of Raleigh, North Carolina; and two grandchildren, Alec Harter of Olive Branch, Mississippi and Arianna Harter of Paris, Arkansas.

Rosary service will be held at 7:30 p.m., on Friday, December 14, 2012 at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Subiaco.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, December 15, 2012 at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Subiaco officiated by Abbot Jerome Kodell O.S.B.. Burial will follow St. Benedict Catholic Cemetery in Subiaco under the direction of Roller Funeral Home in Paris. Online guestbook at www.rollerfuneralhomes.com
