He was a graduate of Harding University, where he met his wife, played on the first intercollegiate basketball team in 1957. He remained active at Harding, serving on the President's Council for many years. He had a great sense of humor and an infectious laugh, even when self directed.

When his children were young, he coached youth football and baseball. He had such innovative ideas, along with an ability to make team sports fun and an affinity for motivating young boys, that they begged to be on one of his teams. He teamed with Clark and Jon to play in Father/Son tennis tournaments, once winning the Arkansas Father/Son Championship.

He never failed to stand up for what was right, no matter the circumstances or repercussions, which served him well in his career with the United States Department of Labor, Wage and Hour Division. In retirement, he enjoyed golfing, painting and giving away much of his work to family, friends and charity auctions. He also spent his time writing and performing volunteer work at North Little Rock Baptist Hospital and Pleasant Valley Church of Christ, where he served as an Elder.
