David W. Wyatt

of Rosie, AR

June 28, 1949 - January 12, 2015

Senator David W. Wyatt, 65, of Rosie, Arkansas, died Monday, January 12, 2015, at White River Medical Center in Batesville.

Born June 28, 1949, in Batesville, he was the son of Gerald Wyatt and Ellen Pruett Wyatt.

He was a 1968 graduate of Southside High School and attended the University of Central Arkansas at Conway. Senator Wyatt was an iconic public servant for Independence County. He continually served for over 30 years - first as Independence County Judge for 20 years, as a member of the Arkansas House of Representatives for four years and as a member of the Arkansas Senate for six years.

He was also a successful farmer and cattleman, managing with his brothers one of the largest farm and cattle operations in northcentral Arkansas.

His political accomplishments and achievements, particularly for Independence County, were many. He created a modern network of paved roads in rural Independence County, expanded trash pickup, established a recycling center that was one of the first of its kind in the state, and built the new Independence County Jail that fully complied with state law.

As a legislator, he sponsored and passed legislation that benefited Arkansans who lived in small towns and rural counties. His advice and counsel was sought by legislators, governors and members of congress. His greatest achievements were the personal acts of kindness performed in a 30-plus years. He was meticulous in returning calls, emails and letters. No request was too small or unimportant. He believed politics was about helping people. He had a heart for helping others and seeing his community succeed.

Aside from public service, he loved working on the family farm. He gained great joy from the everyday tasks of running a big farm and working his cattle. His family was a past recipient of the Arkansas Farm Bureau Independence County Farm Family of the Year award. The greatest joy of his life was spending time with his wife, Deborah, and their children and grandchildren. He was a member of Rosie Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Deborah Bowers Wyatt of Rosie; two sons, Mark Wyatt (Debbie) of Rosie and Matthew Wyatt (Amber) of Rosie; four grandchildren, Greyson Wyatt of Batesville, Bentley and Wren Wyatt, both of Rosie and Hope Wyatt of Batesville; his father, Gerald Wyatt of Rosie; two brothers, John Wyatt (Betty Ann) of Rosie and Stephen Wyatt of Rosie; two aunts, Mary Baxter of Batesville and Billie Miller of Newark; nieces, Sarah Wyatt and Savanna Wyatt; and nephews, Andrew Wyatt and Marshal Wyatt.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Ellen Wyatt; and three uncles, Max, Dwayne and Joe Wyatt.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 14, 2015, at Maple Springs Missionary Baptist Church with Bro. Curt Howard and Bro. Ferrell Miller officiating. Burial will be in Wyatt Cemetery at Rosie under the direction of Roller-Crouch Funeral Home of Batesville.

Pallbearers will be Billy Bob Burns, Chuck Beasley, Wiley Philips, Howard Felts, Mark Ball and Max Mize.

Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Morgan Norton, Royce Wilson, Lee Wilson, Larry Shaw, Judge Robert Griffin, former State Representative J. R. Rogers and Dr. Jim Lytle.

Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 13, 2015, at Maple Springs Baptist Church in Rosie.

Memorials may be made to John 3:16 Ministries Memorial Fund, 75 Holmes Road, Charlotte, AR 72522; Arkansas Sheriffs Youth Ranches Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 3964, Batesville, AR 72503; Rosie Baptist Church, 3129 Newport Road, Rosie, AR 72571; Maple Springs Missionary Baptist Church, P.O. Box 332, Rosie, AR 72571; and UACCB Scholarship Fund, P.O. It was a privilege serving with David in the Arkansas House of Representatives. David exemplified the true meaning of statesmanship and gained the respect of his colleagues with his wisdom and quiet manners. He was so proud to represent his district and particularly enjoyed rolling out the red carpet to legislators visiting in or attending meetings and events in his beloved Batesville. David's family knew the spirit of this public servant and we all have them to thank for sharing David with all of us. David was such a joy to be around. I work for the House of Representatives and we would always exchange stories about our dogs. Even when he became a Senator, he would regularly come visit us. He never had a bad attitude, always had a smile on his face and made us laugh. I was sad to hear of his passing and my sympathies are with the family. He will be greatly missed.

Deborah & family: Words cannot begin to tell you how much David meant to us. David was a wonderful boss and friend. David was the first person that Danny called when we heard the kids had been killed and ya'll showed up immediately. We love you, Mark and Matthew as family and will greatly miss David. We have had some great times together. I'm sure he and Ellen are watching over Christy and Shannon for us.
Love ya'll

May the many prayers give you comfort during this time of sorrow. When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory is a treasure that stays close to your heart forever. Each person that knew David has a treasure because he left so many memories.

I am so very sorry for your loss! I have so many great memories hanging out with Mark & Matthew at your house and riding 3-Wheelers all over the Rosie countryside. I always felt like family--like the girl ya'll didn't have. David will be greatly missed! Love you all, Kristin

Senator Wyatt was a great friend of teachers here in Arkansas. As executive director of the Arkansas Teacher Retirement System, I worked closely with Senator Wyatt. He served with honor and commitment. He was always fair and sought to find the right solution and worked diligently to implement it. I greatly admire Senator Wyatt and his dedicated service. Rest In Peace!
