Haskell Lee Poff, 76, of Jamestown died Friday, October 2, 2009 at his home.
He was born May 16, 1933 at Desha the son of Herman Alfred Poff and Cora Lee (Stair) Poff.
Haskell graduated from Desha High School in 1950 before enlisting in the U.S. Navy. He served three tours on the USS Princeton including the Korean Conflict from 1950-1954. Haskell and Varna Canady were married November 24, 1951. He was an Independence County Deputy Sheriff during the late 1950’s and early 1960’s. Haskell also worked as an auto mechanic, game warden, and in construction. For a period of time in the 1970's, he worked for Aerojet General. Haskell retired from Reynolds Aluminum in 1984. He was a member of the Desha VFW Post 10472 and Mt. Zion Masonic Lodge. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Varna Lee (Canady) Poff of Jamestown; daughters, Brenda Ackerson and Grace Auten, both of Jamestown; sister, Linda Clark of Batesville; grandchildren, Rebecca Renee Auten Oakes of Rogers, Robert Eugene Auten of Rogers, Rebecca Ann Burleigh of Jamestown and Brian Edward Burleigh of Searcy; great-grandchildren, Kyle Austin Oakes and Ryan Jackson Oakes of Rogers; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Gerald and Hershel Poff.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at Roller-Crouch Chapel in Batesville with Bro. Bill Leinenweaver officiating.
Burial will be at Kyler Cemetery under the direction of Roller-Crouch Funeral Home.
Pallbearers are Brian Burleigh, Robert Auten, Keith Harmon, Jimmy Clark, Todd Overton and Michael Canady. Honorary pallbearers are Robert Ford, Norman Hall, Gene Auten, Michael Oakes, Michael Overton, Jerry Poff, Dave Rinkenburger, Jason Clark and Phil Poff. Honorary pallbearers are Robert Ford, Norman Hall, Gene Auten, Michael Oakes, Michael Overton, Jerry Poff, Dave Rinkenburger, Jason Clark and Phil Poff.
The family will receive friends from 5:00-8:00 p.m., Monday, October 5, 2009 at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Arkansas Sheriff’s Youth Ranches Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 3964, Batesville, AR 72503.
