Ethel B. Dunbar

March 25, 1943 - October 9, 2017

Ethel Blake Dunbar, 74, was born on March 25,1943 in Rosston, Arkansas (Nevada County) to the late John Allen and Winnie Mae Blake. She peacefully transitioned from this earthly life on Monday, October 9, 2017 with her daughters by her side.

She accepted Christ into her life at an early age when she joined Cana A.M.E. Church in Rosston, Arkansas. She was a member of First Baptist Highland Park Church for over 40 years. Most recently, she united with Christway Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Roderick Torrence, Sr. where she served as a faithful, diligent member until God called her home.

In her formative years, she attended Oak Grove Public Schools. After graduating a year early from high school, she moved to Little Rock where she completed her educational career by attaining an undergraduate degree in elementary education from Philander Smith College, a master's degree from Ouachita Baptist University and post-graduate certifications in higher education from University of Arkansas at Little Rock. During the course of her 30 years as an educator in the Little Rock School District she worked as a classroom teacher and a testing coordinator; however, she retired in 2009 as the principal of Franklin Elementary. She took great pride in her role as an educator; her zeal for learning was equally matched by her enthusiasm for teaching and mentoring students. She made a lasting impression in the lives of the young people she taught; many of her former students have kept in touch with her over the years.

As your daughters, the magnitude of our loss is infinite. We thank God for placing us in your watchful care for so many years. We will never forget the pearls of wisdom you imparted, your smile, the sound of your laughter, your warm embrace and the essence of your presence.

She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Winnie Mae Blake (Rosston, AR.); sister, Marva Jo Russ (Little Rock, AR.); granddaughter, Alana Ferguson (Louisville, KY) and sister-in-law, Mary Blake (Hot Springs, AR)
She is survived by her daughters: Carmen Dunbar (Arlington, TX,), Lisa Dunbar Ferguson (Louisville, KY). Granddaughters: Alyssa and Alivia Ferguson (Louisville, KY). Brothers: Bernis Blake (Mary) of Hot Springs, John Blake of North Little Rock, Jackie Blake (Beverly) of Little Rock, Tommy Blake (Bernisha) of Palestine, TX. Five nieces: Melody, Sheri, Tanya, Loretta and Crystal. Three nephews: Bernis Jr, William and Jarred. A great niece and nephew: Clarisa and Larnel Jr. And lastly, a whole host of relatives and friends.

''Did you ever know that you're my hero ~ and everything I would like to be?
I can fly higher than an eagle ~ Mom ~ because you are the wind beneath my wings.''
Love, Carmen and Lisa

Please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss. I have a lot of fun memories of Ethel. We worked together at Carver Elementary, Romine Elementary, and Pulaski Heights Elementary. I will always remember carpooling with Ethel and Frances during the start of my career. Ethel always shared some of the funniest stories. She was a wonderful teacher because she expected the best of all students and she cared about all of them. Ethel was a great educator and she made a positive impact in the lives of many, many students. May you find peace and joy in the many special memories shared with Ethel. May God bless each of you.

And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes,+ and death will be no more,+ neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore.+ The former things have passed away.” (Revelation 21:4) This prophecy tells us that one day we will see our dead loved ones again in a new world! Please seek Jehovah God to see his promises fulfilled.....
