Jonathan "Popsie" Frank Bennett Wood

of North Little Rock, AR

April 24, 1938 - October 3, 2009

Jonathan Frank Bennett Wood, 71 of North Little Rock, died Saturday, October 3, 2009. He was born on Sunday, April 24, 1938 in Washington D.C. and was a resident of North Little Rock for 29 years.

Mr. Wood was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Raleigh and Elberta Wood and a brother, Raleigh Edward Wood. He is survived by his devoted wife Margie of 49 years, son Clark and his wife Michelle of Sherwood, son Jon and his wife Lisa of North Canton, OH and daughter Carol (Pearcy) and her husband Bob of Texarkana, TX and by his 9 grandchildren whom he loved dearly, Meagan and Bennett Allen Wood, Avery, Merin, Jonathan Jacob, and Claire Wood and Morgan, Jay Bennett and Lillie Kate Pearcy. Mr. Wood is also survived his beloved nieces and nephews Raleigh, Joe, Andy and Marcus Wood and their mother Opal Wood, all of MS, along with Linda Branum of Sullivan, MO, Janice Trice of North Little Rock, Paul Bolls of Columbia, MO, Lisa Arterbury of El Paso, TX and Robin Vaughn of Los Cruces, NM.

Mr. Wood had many talents, was intelligent, smart, musical, artistic and athletic however, he was most talented at being a loving, generous, involved and fun husband, father, "Popsie" and "Uncle Bennett". He was a graduate of Harding University, where he met his wife, played on the first intercollegiate basketball team in 1957. He remained active at Harding, serving on the President's Council for many years. He had a great sense of humor and an infectious laugh, even when self directed.

When his children were young, he coached youth football and baseball. He had such innovative ideas, along with an ability to make team sports fun and an affinity for motivating young boys, that they begged to be on one of his teams. He teamed with Clark and Jon to play in Father/Son tennis tournaments, once winning the Arkansas Father/Son Championship.

He never failed to stand up for what was right, no matter the circumstances or repercussions, which served him well in his career with the United States Department of Labor, Wage and Hour Division. In retirement, he enjoyed golfing, painting and giving away much of his work to family, friends and charity auctions. He also spent his time writing and performing volunteer work at North Little Rock Baptist Hospital and Pleasant Valley Church of Christ, where he served as an Elder. He was also a minister and presided over the weddings of many family and friends. He was a Godly man.

Visitation will be held at Roller Chenal Funeral Home (501-224-8300), 13801 Chenal Parkway, Little Rock, AR from 6-8 P.M. on Monday, October 5, 2009. Funeral Services and a Celebration of Mr. Wood's life will be held at Pleasant Valley Church of Christ at 1:00 P.M. on Tuesday, October 6, 2009.

Interment at Pinecrest Memorial Park, Alexander, Arkansas.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the J.F. Bennett Wood Endowment, c/o Steve Lake, Harding University 915 E. Market Ave. Searcy, Arkansas 72143.

Arrangements by Roller Owens Funeral Home (501-791-7400).

Margie, Clark, Jon and Carol... Just logged in to FB and noticed this update. It's been a long time since we've been in Arkansas but the years I was there when I attended HU with Jon was a special time in my life. Meeting Bennett and your family. I will never forget his laugh and most of all our inside joke of me being a 'filipino' to make to call you all before I come over. God bless you and know that Karen and I will be praying for you and your family God bless... Abe.

Carol-
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Your dad was so full of life. When I think of the time I spent with you and your family I think of his smile, his laughter, his love of golf, and most of all his love for his family. You and your brothers are carrying on a wonderful legacy. Love to you, your mom, Bob, the kids, and your brothers and their families. I wish I lived closer, so I could hug you in person.

I extend my sincere condolences to the entire Wood family. In this difficult time may you find strength in knowing that God "is near to those that are broken at heart; and those who are crushed in spirit he saves."-Psalm 34:18 May this loving assurance and his precious promise that we can be reunited with our loved ones by means of a resurrection (John 5:28,29) bring you a measure of comfort now and in the days ahead.

Margie, I am saddened to learn of Bennett's passing. He was a special and caring individual. In the three decades of periodic contacts with Bennett during our Wage & Hour careers, I learned to treasure his friendship, thoughtful kindnesses and great empathy. (I still have my matching tie he selected for four of us to wear in a training session!)

I am so sorry to hear of Bennett passing away. He was definitely an extraordinary man. Even as a small child, I recognized him as being multi-talented, singing songs, playing the guitar, drawing pictures and sewing costumes. But most of all, I remember Bennett as being very funny and warm hearted.

Margie---to you and the family Lois and I send our sincere condolences. The first time Bennett and I met was in Hope in the mid 1970s. I was impressed by the office he had and the work he was doing and around Hope. Eventually he would transfer to Little Rock as the Assistant District Director. He continued his excellent support of the agency.I shared his love for tennis and no management meeting went without a challenge from Bennett. He always assumed he was going to win , however since I was the boss I think at times he let me win a few points.May God be with you, the children and grandchildren as you all get through these next days, weeks and months. I know you will miss him.

He definitely touched our lives, as all of you have, and he will be greatly missed. I count it an honor to have known him and to have spent time with him. I will treasure the artwork from him for a lifetime! His talents, abilities, generosity, and love will live on in the lives that he has touched. I remember Mr. Wood well from my days as a young Wage and Hour Investigator some 20 years ago when he conducted training for the Houston office. His professionalism, good humor, and caring attitude are what I remember even though we only met a couple of times.

It's good to read that he was an elder in his church. I currently serve as a deacon in mine and know a bit of the responsibility the elders have.

I hope the Wood family will experience the "peace that passes all understanding" now and in the future.

Dear Margie and family,

Bennet was instrumental in me being hired by the Department of Labor 22 years ago and consequently he played a role in what turned out to be a life changing experience for me. He was my first supervisor in my career and I spent many hours with him as he patiently imparted his wealth of knowledge. I always had the deepest respect and admiration for Bennett. He was a kind, caring and loving person. He took such great joy in his family and loved recounting antecdotal information about all of you. I am very sad to hear of his passing. My heart goes out to all of you in this time of sadness.
