Samuel Charles ''Sammy'' Saia, Sr., 66. of West Helena, Arkansas passed away Tuesday, May 20, 2008 in Memphis, Tennessee. Mr. Saia was born February 20, 1942 in Helena, Arkansas to Rose Brocato Saia and the late Anthony ''Tony'' William Saia.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Bernard Saia of West Helena; his mother, Rose Saia of Helena; daughters, Cheryl Scarbrough and husband, Skip, of Helena and Barbara Tucker of Orlando, Florida; a son, Sam Saia, Jr. and wife, Jennifer, of West Helena; brother, Billy Saia of Barton; brother-in-law, David Bernard of Helena; grandson, Blake Doster of Ozark, Arkansas; granddaughters, Shelby Tucker of Orlando, Florida, Mary Katherine Saia of West Helena, Beth Ann Scarbrough of Helena and Emily Saia of West Helena.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Services for Sammy Saia will be held Friday, May 23, 2008 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Helena. Father Joe Marconi will officiate. A rosary service will be held at 7 p.m., Thursday, at Roller-Citizens, with visitation from 5-8 p.m. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Helena.
Pallbearers are Blake Robbins, David Bernard, Bryan Davis, Pat Truemper, Lindsey Neighbors and Paul Battle, III. Honorary pallbeares are Sammy Charles Brocato, Norman Bryant, Lucien Webster, Eugene Young, Neil Robbins, Jim Young, Charles Sibley, Ernie Sibley, James O. Gabbie, Blackie Jumper and Larry Delk.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church, 123 Columbia Street, Helena, Arkansas 72342.

I am grateful for the opportunity of knowing and hunting with Sammy back in the days of Island 64 Hunting Club. It was a pleasure to be around such a fun person. Everyone enjoyed having him there. No one could tell a hunting experience like Sammy, even down to how the dogs were sounding.

I am so sorry about Mr. Sam, I just loved working for you guys during high school. He was good to me and always had a hug for me even after I left Helena and would run into him on a visit. I will keep you guys in my prayers.
I will never forget the coon hunts with Mr. Saia and company back when I was barely old enough to walk nearly 40 years ago. I still remember his prize dog Pete leading the pack. Hearing Sammy tell stories and joke around always made me laugh. I pray that comfort will be upon your family during this time.
