Maybe we shouldn't admit it but we all have favorite uncles and Gerald was mine. I've always been interested in guns, since birth my mother used to say, but those trips when I was a youngster to visit Uncle Gerald influenced me greatly. My dad Charles and Gerald would always end up on the porch after a meal at grandma Carters with one of Gerald's rifles shooting at cans on fence posts or whatever. Back then Gerald was always trading guns and cars and a lot of times he'd have something different. He would take the time to explain all about the guns to me. I'd sit there hoping and praying they'd let me have a try, most of the time I'd get to shoot once or twice. For a kid already interested in guns it was a huge treat.

Later when I got a little older and had a rifle of my own Uncle Gerald took me squirrel hunting, he was at home in the woods and was a natural shot. I considered myself a pretty good shot but I don't think I ever got a shot at a squirrel because he'd see them and shoot them before I ever even got a glimpse of one. Even thou it wasn't all that often spending time like that with such a good and caring Uncle sticks with you all your life.

Later in life I got a job helping teach some of our first anti-terrorist units the shooting skills we had developed in competition. Many times I related the skills of my Uncle Gerald and his natural abilities. Talking to him about my job he told me his story where in Korea he was one of the men trapped on a hill during what became known as the battle of Pork Chop Hill. I had admired the decoration he received hanging on his wall but this was the first time he talked about it. I don't think he told that story to many and I felt honored to hear it. Uncle Gerald was one of those quiet heroes that didn't want or need recognition, he loved his country and did his job as did my father in WW2 and Korea.

Good bye for now Uncle Gerald, I'm sure your spot in heaven is secure. While on this earth you set an example, you started from beginnings few can even imagine these days, served your country well and worked hard to provide for and raise a good family.

Uncle Gerald was special to me. We enjoyed each other's company. He loved to tell old stories, and I loved listening to him talk. Aunt Margie surely welcomed him home. I will see them again someday.
