Dorothy Ruth Rebecca Burnett

of Harrison, AR

October 15, 1925 - August 19, 2014

Dorothy Ruth Rebecca Burnett, age 88, of Harrison, passed away Tuesday, August 19, 2014. She was born October 15, 1925, in Hecktown, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Lloyd and Pauline Catherine (Maurer) Schultz. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dutch Paul Burnett, Sr.; her son, Howard Gibbany; three brothers, Howard, Stanley, and Allen; and two sisters, Alverta and Emma. When Howard passed away it broke Dorothy's heart.

Dorothy was of the Lutheran faith. She spent a number of years living in El Paso and Brownwood, Texas where she became an avid angler woman. They then moved to Harrison to be nearer her sons and plenty of great fishing areas. Dorothy loved animals and had a Sheltie, Regis, who was her constant companion and spoiled rotten. She would speak her mind as she saw it when she felt it was needed and few dared to deny her advice, (as far as her family was concerned).

One of Dorothy's favorite past times was bird watching. She had a nest of wrens on her porch and waited each year for them to return and loved watching the babies leave and return each year. Her favorite bird was the Hummingbird and she could spend hours watching them fly around. She had numerous birdfeeders and birdhouses around her home. Another favorite pass time was watching and caring for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Near the end she was confined to a scooter chair and taught her great-great-great- granddaughter how to drive the scooter and they drove all around the house.

Before her eye sight became a problem, Dorothy would crochet afghans and various household items and give them away. She had a great love of Elmo and there are Elmos all around the house. She would spend hours each day watching Game Show Network and RFD TV. She loved the older music, especially Bluegrass and Gospel. Her son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Des, were her main caregivers until her death.

One day her son Paul picked some Hyacinth and set them on the table in blue paper. Her son Howard came to visit and they decided to make enchiladas and took what they beloved to be onions and made enchiladas. She asked her son Paul what kind of onions they were and he said what onions. She said the ones wrapped in blue paper. Paul then told her they were not onions but Hyacinth bulbs. Needless to say there were no enchiladas for dinner that night.

She always ensured there was plenty of food or leftovers for anyone and if you left hungry it was your own fault. She was one of the world's best bakers and cook until the loss of her eyesight made cooking dangerous. She taught her son Paul to cook and if it was not done to her expectations she would get out a fly swatter and ensure it was done to her liking as she had to all her children.

Toward the end, all Dorothy wanted were Sonic Slushies, which were introduced to her by her daughter. Earlier on, she and Jim would often go to Sonic for a Coney dog, which they both loved and would brag about getting.

Dorothy is survived by three sons and their wives, James ''Jim'' and Karin Gibbany of Alpena, Arkansas, Fredrick ''Fred'' and Deloris Gibbany of Harrison, and Paul and Desiree Burnett of Harrison; one daughter and her husband, Norma and Glen Smith, of Norfolk, Virginia; 13 grandchildren, Gabriel, April, Christopher, Elisha, Margie, Donald, Dawn, Ruth, Tina, Jesse, Michael, Torie and Devin;
28 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Goldie Rothrock, of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, whom she stayed in constant contact with; and her daughter-in-law, Sherry Gibbany, of Harrison. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her but we all know we will see her again when our time comes. We all love you!

Memorial service was Friday, August 22, 2014, at Roller-Christeson Funeral Home.

Honorary Pallbearers were Jesse Gibbany, Mike Gibbany, Gabriel Gibbany, Chris Carson, D.J. Weaver, Eric Stubbs and Chris Lackey.
