Jewell Jackson Griffin

of Helena, AR

December 9, 1933 - June 17, 2016

Jewell Jackson Griffin was born at home on December 9, 1933 to Ed and Gerald Dean Jackson in St. Charles, Arkansas and died at home in Hospice Care on June 17, 2016 at the age of 82. Jewel's childhood was spent on the river in St Charles, Arkansas and she and her sisters were later featured in a film documentary and magazine article about their interesting life on the river in their formative years. As a teenager Jewell worked in a family grocery and, because of her job, met the love of her life, Buron Griffin Sr., by selling him a sandwich. She married Buron on November 11, 1948 and dedicated her life to serving God, family and community.

Jewell was passionate about caring for her family and helping others. She was a loving wife and mother and volunteer. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Helena, Explorer's Bible Study, a former board member of the Helena Library, former member of Junior Auxiliary, HCC Ladies Golf Association, the Cotton Wives club and two bridge clubs. She taught Sunday school, vacation Bible School, and a ceramics class through her church. Jewell valued her faith, family and friends above all else and taught her children about God, service and what true friendship should be. Her closest friends were the Ladies of the Lake (named for Lucy Boyds lake house) who banded together for over 60 years to share coffee, laughter, raise their children, and later in life, travel together. They were the original Ya Ya sisterhood.

Jewell was an accomplished painter, pilot, golfer, shell collector, fisherman, gardener, seamstress, cook, horsewoman, dog trainer, bridge player, photographer and birder, winning awards at county fairs and other contests for her many talents. She loved the Razorbacks and she and Rada Jackson made many a SEC tournament road trip to call those Hogs. After her children were grown she became a successful real estate broker, but gave up her career to travel with her husband, Buron.

Jewell was remarkable and became accomplished at whatever she put her mind to and when she wanted to learn something she mastered it. In her late 70s she took up birding and digital photography with her friend Patty Smith. Watching birds gave her great joy until the time of her death.

Jewell is preceded in death by her parents, and her brother James Jackson. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Buron Griffin, Sr. of Helena, son, Buron Griffin, Jr. (Judy) of Helena, daughter, Mary Jane Orellano (Daniel) of Little Rock, grandson Tracy Griffin (Amy) of Helena, grandson Griffin Marczuk of Fayetteville, great-grand children Tripp and Carolyne Griffin of Helena and sisters Virginia Hall (Buddy) of Dewitt and Loraine Snyder of Stuttgart, numerous brother and sister in-laws and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the physicians and staff at University of Arkansas Medical Center, Cypert Ridge Medical Clinic, Patient Choice Hospice, Cecelia Smith, R.N., and Andrea Clark and her team of amazing caregivers who so lovingly cared for Jewell in her final days.

A celebration of Jewells life will be held on Tuesday, June 21 at 10:00 a.m. at the Salem Baptist Church in Cypert, AR with burial at the church cemetery immediately following the ceremony. Visitation will be Monday, June 20 at Roller Citizen funeral homes in West Helena, AR from 5:00-7:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice or the First Baptist Church in Helena. The family invites you to sign the online guest book at www.rollerfuneralhomes.com

God blessed us all in knowing Jewell. Her smile is just one example of her love of the Lord. Many who have gone before are celebrating her presence in Heaven. We, too, will see her as well. I pray that God, who is ever faithful, will comfort you, Buron, and all of the family.
