STEPHEN WHEATLEY COOKE, JR, 73 of Barton/Lexa, Arkansas passed away Tuesday, January 19, 2016. He was born August 24, 1942 to Nell Sumner and Wheatley Cooke.
Known to family and friends as Steve, he earned the nickname Dusty at a young age. He was a retired farmer and ''boss man'' at Wayside Farms. A devoted husband, father, and Poppy to his granddaughters, he was admired as a business person, mentor, and cherished friend to many.
Left to remember him are wife of 53 years Anna Mae Steinbeck Cooke; daughters Stephenie Ann Cooke (Teresa Roseberry) and Karen Cooke Schwantz (Hershell); granddaughters Lynnli Claire Schwantz and Kayli Ann Schwantz; sister Billie Jo Moore (John); several nieces, nephews, and extended family; and special ''son'' David Maier. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Brenda Rushing.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff of the Outpatient Clinic and ICU at Helena Regional Medical Center.
Funeral service will be at 1:00 on Saturday, January 23, 2016, at Roller-Citizens, 508 Plaza, West Helena with graveside service to follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 5783 Highway 49, West Helena. Visitation will follow the graveside service at The Cooke's home 629 Phillips Road 253 Loop, Lexa.
Memorials may be sent to DeSoto School, PO Box 2807, West Helena, AR or any local animal charity.
Services will be directed by Roller-Citizens Funeral Home, West Helena, (870) 572-2571.

Anna Mae, I was so sorry to hear of Steve's passing. We played little league baseball in the 50s and were on the all star team. He was a good man and a good husband. May God bring you peace and good memories to you and your family.

Hi Anna, So sorry to hear of Steve's passing, A few years ago, 1956-58, Ole Bo Tatter lived across the road and we visited a lot. Brenda was more our age but we put up with Steve because he had two pretty sisters!!. Ha

So sorry for Steve's passing. You know the Cooke's were my family too and I have many great memories of them. I will miss him, as I do Brenda. Steve was a sweet and generous person and will be sorely missed as a friend to many. We know he is in a better place now, making more friends and seeing old ones.

Mr. Cook was a goid man he and my Dad were reserve Sheriff and he was a Blessing to many. One time after my Dads bad heart attack Steve mad his day by dropping by Dad's house andit really cheered Dad up. That was the person he was always giving to others. So sorry your loss. blessings

At times like this, I find myself at a loss for words. I was a grade or two behind Steve at Barton School for many years. I got word from a fellow classmate of mine just now. Anna Mae, I didn't ever get to meet you, but my heart goes out to you, family and friends. Steve was always a great guy in school. The picture in the obituary shows the same smile he exhibited many years ago.
Steve left us with many good memories. Prayers for you, your children and grands.

Oh Ana Mae, my prayers are with you and your family. I've known Steve for so many years and truly considered him one of my very best friends. I can remember so many good times we spent together and always looked forward to our trips when we came over to visit you guys.
