Rodger Dean Hooker

of Helena, AR

February 2, 1943 - May 16, 2015

Reverend Rodger Dean Hooker, age 72, of Helena, Arkansas died Saturday, May 16, 2015 in Little Rock, Arkansas. Rodger was born February 2, 1943 in DeQueen, Arkansas to his parents, Lonnie and Lois Hooker.

He was the pastor of Fourth Street Baptist Church in West Helena, Arkansas for the past fourteen years. Rodger received his bachelor of arts of degree from Central Baptist College in 1965 and was ordained to the gospel ministry in 1969.

Rodger had an insatiable love for southern gospel music, and will be forever remembered for his gentle and generous spirit. One person said that the word ''no'' was not in his vocabulary which often found him overloaded with work. Reverend Hooker served two churches as minister of music before beginning his pastoral ministry which led him to serve in five churches.

He was employed with Roller Funeral Homes for 21 years serving as either manager, director or embalmer, and at times all three. His intense love for helping people has endeared him to his family, church, community and a host of friends. Humor was a natural gift that he used to lighten any situation or lift the spirits of heavy hearts.

Rodger was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Carolyn ''Sue'' Long Hooker; and brother, Earl Hooker.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Wilhite Hooker; son, Rodger D. ''Chip'' Hooker, Jr. of Malvern, Arkansas; daughter, Lois Ann Hooker of Hot Springs, Arkansas; stepson, Dan Wilhite of Hot Springs; grandchildren, Lindsey Bulloch (Justin) of Little Rock, Arkansas, Lance Madden of Helena, Richard Hooker of Malvern, Samantha Hooker of Malvern and Lyric Wilhite of Hot Springs; and two great-grandchildren, Ashlyn Cross and Alexis Hooker.

A service for Rodger Hooker will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, May 21, 2015 at West Helena Baptist Church. Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 12:00-7:00 p.m., with the family receiving visitors from 5:00-7:00 p.m., at Roller-Citizens Funeral Home. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Park in West Helena. Dr. J.E. Hughes will officiate.

Pallbearers are Jeremy Moneymaker, Johnny Walker, Johnny Martin, Chad Alsup, Steve Darnall and Brant Boyd. Honorary pallbearers are the Brotherhood of Fourth Street Baptist Church and all the employees of Roller-Citizens Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Fourth Street Baptist Church, 1266 North Fourth Street, West Helena, Arkansas 72390.

Services will be directed by Roller-Citizens Funeral Home, West Helena, (870) 572-2571.

There are no words to express my sympathy for Bro. Hooker's family. Bro. Hooker, Sue, and the kids were like famliy to me and my parents growing up. Time, distance, and life sometimes changes that. Cherrywood was the first church he pastored and God blessed his ministry there, he took a church of about 70 people and grew it into one of the largest churches in the Sylvan Hills area at the time (over 300 people). I will always appreciate his willingness to help my family in time of need. It didn't matter where he was pastoring, he ALWAYS took the time to minister to us during crisis.I think he was 'lost' without Sue ( she was a wonderful Pastor's wife and a dear friend to my mother). i'm thankful that they are reuniited now and all is well. I lost my dad last November, and my mother 7 1/2 yrs ago. I know when the saw 'their preacher' arrive, they ran to him ! Rest in peace Rodger Hooker, you never would slow down enough to do that here. One thing you reallly taught me, was how important and amazing God's grace is, because I fail him miserabley at times and desperatley need His Grace. You lived by faith and relied on His grace here among us, but now your faith has become sight, as you now look into the 'face of Grace.'

I wish to offer my most sincere condolences to the family and many friends of Rodger. I was blessed to have brought Rodger and his very dear friend Dr. Bob Batson into the profession of Funeral Service. Both of these fine men had served in the ministry of our Lord Jesus Christ for many years, so interring into the ministry of Funeral Service was a very natural thing. I am pleased to say that Rodger served in both of these ministries with the upmost professionalism. I have always considered Rodger a very dear friend and will truly look forward to the reunion in heaven some day.

Brother Roger was a Great Christian man who loved GOD and never missed a chance to share his love for the LORD! When I would visit back home I would go to Fourth Street Baptist Church to hear Bro. Hooker preach! He was one of a few who could preach and the words came out of his mouth like he was reading his sermon but he always looked out at the members and to my knowledge did not use notes! The words rolled out of his mouth like GOD was using him and it was really GOD SPEAKING! Very few people can speak like he could and I loved to hear him PREACH THE WORD OF GOD! Brother Roger Hooker will be missed by many people and surely by me and my sister who was a member of the Church that He was the Pastor of . You walk those streets of Gold with JESUS

I had the privelidge of knowing Rodger from about his first day working for Roller. He and I went on many a road trip for funerals and lost quite a bit of sleep when I would call him in the middle of the night to help with removals. He never said no on either one. He also had an uncaney knack of knowing where the best place to eat were in all the towns and places that we visited. To his family I send my condolences on his passing. The world lost a very unique person and heaven got a very good and deserving angle.

Rodger Hooker was all that each one has written about him. But to me, a young country boy from a small town in AR, who knew very little about music, he was a mentor as well as a good friend. When I first came to CBC in 1962, I knew I wanted to work in music and youth work in the Lord's churches. The problem was that I had little or no training in vocal music, sight-reading, harmony, etc. Our choir director, Bro. James Burch, suggested I stand beside Rodger and "you will learn to sing tenor". I did and I did. Rodger was an excellent accompanist, and could sing any part. But, above all of these, his friendship, smile/laughter, and all-around good nature put me, (and anyone else, for that matter) at ease instantly. I wasn't sure that I was going to be able to attend the 4 years required for the Bachelor of Religious Education degree, but Rodger again, was the encourager! He was the 3rd person in the history of CBC to obtain this degree, and I was the 4th. Though we haven't seen each other in many years, his influence on me and patient kindness shown to young country boy with "zeal and little knowledge" will never be forgotten. God bless his family and the great legacy he leaves.
