On April 3, 2012, Phillip C. "Duke" Herlein, passed away. He was born on September 4, 1923, in Memphis, TN., and grew up in Helena, Arkansas, where he attended Sacred Heart Academy, and was a Member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
He graduated from Subiaco Academy, joined the U. S. Army and served his country during WWII. He attended Arkansas Tech University were he played football, and met a cute cheerleader from Benton, Arkansas, Mary Beth Davenport. They eloped on January 8, 1947.
After moving to Helena, Duke was employed by his father, at Helena Electric Company, and he and Beth raised 4 children.
Duke served as Owner and President of Helena Electric Company for forty years, was a Arkansas Razorback Wild Hog scholarship donor, a member of the Knights Of Columbus, and a member of Mary Mother of God Catholic Church in Harrison.
He was an avid golfer, hunter, dancer, and Razorback fan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Philip C. Herlein Sr., and Ethel Schneider Herlein, formerly of Helena. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Beth (Davenport,) and his children, Phyllis "Philly" Rains of Harrison, Peggy Sims (Jim) of Blytheville, Mary Beth Dyer (Everett) of Clarendon, and Philip C. "Chuck" Herlein, III, of Marion, his brother, Eddie, of Cherokee Village, seven grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren.
A celebration of his life will be held at Roller Citizens Funeral Home in Helena-West Helena, at 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 7th, followed by a reception for family and friends at the Catholic Club at noon. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Subiaco Academy, St. Mary's Catholic Church in Helena-West Helena, or Mary Mother of God Catholic Church in Harrison.
