Betty June Carter, 89, a resident of Fort Smith, formerly of Subiaco, passed away Wednesday, May 4, 2016, in Fort Smith.

She was born June 13, 1926, in Ionia, Michigan to the late Benjamin and Ressie (Pence) Sutherland. After graduating from Paris High School in 1943, June worked in the defense industry during World War II. On September 5, 1944, she married Joseph Wesley Carter, Jr. and relocated to Subiaco. June worked for the United States Postal Service at Subiaco first as a postal clerk and then as Postmaster. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Paris and the Logan County Historical Society where she wrote many articles about the history of Paris.

In addition to her parents, June was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Wesley Carter, Jr.; her daughter, Janis Marie Carter; three brothers, Benjamin, Norman and Cecil Sutherland.

Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Joseph Bradford and Melanie Carter of Oak Ridge, Tennessee and John David Carter of Subiaco; seven grandchildren, Valerie Carter of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, Duncan Cameron Carter, Evan Joseph Carter; Lindsey Rose Carter, all of New Jersey, Marie Henson of Van Buren, Shena Hunt of Birchfield, Tennessee and Zachary Crone of Knoxville, Tennessee; three great grandchildren, Delaney and Zane Hunt, both of Birchfield, Tennessee and Amber Henson of Tulsa, Oklahoma and four great-great-grandchildren, Sierra Henson, Chance Henson, Harlee Henson and Emma Smith all of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Visitation will from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., Saturday, May 7, 2016, at the Roller Funeral Home in Paris.

Graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 7, 2016, at McKendree Cemetery. Burial will follow under the direction of Roller Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Tim Henson, Kyle Carter, Jeffrey Hunt, Brad Carter, John Carter and Zachary Crone.

As a girl we attended Subiaco community Church with the garters … many a ice cream social at their home !! I thought they were the fanciest folks around with an indoor toilet and running water !!

I have so many memories of this sweet lady. From the quaint little church behind our house in Subi to sitting around the table with her and Joe Jr. and Johnny playing Scrabble and hearing her laugh and her words of encouragement. Such a beautiful person inside and out.
