Connie Denise Jackson Word

of Benton, AR

January 15, 1957 - August 24, 2015

Connie Denise Jackson Word passed away peacefully on August 24, 2015 at Saline Memorial Hospital in Benton, Arkansas; she was 58 years old. Born in Little Rock on January 15, 1957, she was the third child of James Edward and Modean Jackson. She graduated from Joe T. Robinson High School in 1975 and attended the University of Arkansas at Little Rock before working in several investment brokerage firms throughout central Arkansas.
In 1990 Connie married George Word, moved to Washington, D.C. and began a new life in the Foreign Service of the United States. She rode camels in Pakistan, elephants in Zimbabwe and danced like an angel at Marine Corps Balls on three continents. She could wear an evening gown like a runway model and throw a runner out at home from second base with laser sharp accuracy. But Connie's greatest joys in life were her three children, Rebecca, Elizabeth and James. Her love for them was deeper than the seven oceans and she raised each with constant affection and independent splendor. Motherhood was Connie's calling in life and no one has ever done it better.
Our hearts are saddened as we will miss hearing Connie's deep belly laugh and feeling the warmth of her beautiful smile that could light up any room and melt any heart. But our emotions are eclipsed by the realization that she is now at peace, dancing in heaven and smiling down upon us all.
Connie was preceded in death by her parents; beloved grandparents William and Verna Martindale; and siblings Carrie, Brian and Charles Craighead. She is survived by her loving husband George; children Rebecca Word Burkman (husband Blake), Elizabeth Ashley Word and James McCray Word; sisters, Dianna Sharp and Vicki Clements; and brother, J. Michael Jackson. A celebration of Connie's life will be held on Saturday August 29th, at Roller-Owens Funeral Home, 5509 John F. Kennedy Blvd in North Little Rock (501-791-7400). A visitation will begin at 1:00 PM, immediately followed by a 2:00 PM service. There will be a private burial at Nooner Cemetery in Perry County. The family wishes to express our deepest gratitude to the dedicated staff of the Arkansas Health Center (Willow Court) and the congregation of First United Methodist Church in North Little Rock. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 909 West 2nd Street, Little Rock, AR 72201 or The Fallen Heroes Fund, Police and Fire Memorial Fund, C/O IAFF Local 22, 415 North Fifth Street, Philadelphia, PA 19123.

I knew Connie when she came to Robinson Jr. H.S. as a 7th grader... I was in the Class of 1973, until I left in the Fall of ‘71... The 1st time I met Connie, We instantly knew that we would be Buddies... I went to College upon my Graduation from L.R. Catholic High School in 1973... After College and my Service in the Military, I returned to Little Rock, AND I MOVED INTO AN APARTMENT COMPLEX, AND I SAW HER, She lived in an apartment 4 doors down from me... She instantly recognized me, and we had a WONDERFUL VISIT... I lived there for a couple of years, And kept in touch with Our Beautiful Friend, We Never Dated, WE WERE OLD BUDDIES, BUT I LOVED HER BECAUSE OF HER SWEETNESS, AND I SOOOOOOO REGRET NOT STAYING IN TOUCH WITH HER... When I heard of Her condition, and then saw Ann Presley’s Channel 7 Story entitled “STATE OF CARE” with Connie’s and George’s Story and Tragedy, I SHOULD HAVE GONE TO HASKELL, where Connie was, But, I didn’t... The Real TRAGEDY IS THAT I HAD A GOOD BUDDY THAT TAUGHT SCHOOL AT HARMONY GROVE HIGH SCHOOL, AND I VISITED HIS SCHOOL MANY TIMES, NOT KNOWING THAT CONNIE WAS ONLY A VERY FEW BLOCKS FROM ARKANSAS HWY 229, AND I COULD HAVE AND WOULD HAVE GONE TO SEE HER , BUT I DID NOT MAKE THE EFFORT TO FIND OUT WHERE SHE WAS... There is A SUPER VALUABLE LESSON TO ALL OF MY RAMBLINGS, IF YOU CARE FOR SOMEONE, AND YOU FIND OUT THAT THEY HAVE HAD A HORRIBLE ACCIDENT AND THEY ARE IN A HOSPITAL OR NURSING HOME, DO NOT MISS THE OPPORTUNITY TO GO SEE THEM, REGARDLESS IF THEY KNOW YOU OR RECOGNIZE YOU, DO NOT DO WHAT I DID, FOLLOW YOUR HEART, AND GO SEE THEM AS MUCH AS YOU CAN... IT IS NOW 2:29 A.M. on December 22, 2022, And I looked up Connie and George on Google, AND I SAW CONNIE’S OBITUARY, I will carry this with me for the REST OF MY LIFE... My 68th Birthday was yesterday, AND THE ONLY BRIGHT SPOT IN THIS WHOLE WRITING OF MINE, IS THAT I WILL SEE CONNIE AGAIN IN HEAVEN... I CANNOT WAIT TO SEE YOU, CONNIE, I ALWAYS LOVED YOU, SWEET ANGEL LADY... I HOPE YOU WILL RECOGNIZE ME IN PARADISE... I LOVE YOU, Connie... YOURS TRULY, TRULY SINCERELY, BILL O’BRIANT...

George, like everyone who knew Connie, I have nothing but fond memories of her. I have a service today in Vilonia at 1:00 p.m., so I can't attend Connie's, but wanted you to know I was thinking of you and the kids. Deanna and Bryan are planning to be there. I assume you wrote the obituary...it really captured who she was. You've had and long a difficult road to travel, but you've done it heroically.

Dear Michael and family,
I am so sorry about Connie. I never had the pleasure of knowing her, however if she was anything like her brother, she had to be so warm and caring and just a wonderful person to be around. Thinking of you and yours and just cherish the wonderful memories that you have.
Love,
Lisa

My sincere condolences to Connie's family and friends. She and I were majorettes together in HS and I have very fond memories of time spent together. We would practice our routines in her yard or mine until dark (usually because we couldn't agree on the music). And band camp, oh my! She was the life of the party! Her smile and beauty were infectious. I pray you find peace in the knowledge that she was a shining star whose light shone over so many lives.

I worked with CJ most of the 80's and was one of her friends before she married George and moved away. I offer this prayer: May God bless each of us that cared for her and will miss her presence. I ask God to give the entire family comfort at this difficult time. Her outstanding character, humor and subtle charm were ever present to all of her friends. May God grant her peace for eternity.

Connie was beautiful inside & out & what I remember about her most was her sweetness toward other people. She could twirl a batton high in the air, even with both ends lit with fire! She had the most beautiful black thick head of hair & swing it back. My heart goes out to her family & The Class of 1975 & close friend's! I know the journey in her life was met with great pain, but she is at perfect peace & has a brand new body!

My sincere condolences to the entire family. I've made numerous trips over the years to see Connie at Benton. I like to remember her as the beautiful and vibrant person that I went to high school with. I don't understand why things happen they way they do, but I know that we are ultimately not in control. I pray for the family that they will have God's peace surround them in the coming days as they have to say goodbye to her for the final time. I can't begin to understand what it's been like over the years for you all, but I know ONE who does understand. Life is hard. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Linda George Kam RHS class of 75
