Although saddened by his passing, I was enlightened by Coach Smith's life. He came into a proud town of Harrison in the early 70's and left many winners along the way. He looked like a head football coach, acted like one, and developed boys into young men. He taught me three important life lessons. First, team comes well before individuals. Secondly, preparation begins on Saturday mornings after a game. Thirdly, running line drills on the football field is ten times longer than a basketball court! God bless this great man.

I feel very fortunate to have gotten to play football for coach smith at Harrison in 1973 and 1974. He was a good fellow with lots of energy and just a brilliant mind. He was also an excellent history teacher!

I think I caused him more distress than was necessary and I feel truly sorry for that. Oh well, I was learning about my abilities and about how the world works. Coach smith helped me figure a lot of that out. Love and peace to all of you! We will all be in heaven together someday and football scores won't matter!

The lessons I learned from Coach Smith about hard work and winning as a Wynne Yellowjacket have been a tremendous blessing over the last 3+ decades. It was so great to be part of his conference championship teams in 1977 and 1978. We will all miss him.

I was a student of Coach Smith's history class in Harrison, AR during the 1970's. He was such a kind and caring man, and though I was a proud "Goblin" and he left a strong legacy in that field, his coaching skills weren't important to me. I was just an ordinary student, but his care and concern for his students touched my life. That's what a great educator does. He made a difference in many lives during his tenure in Harrison. He will be missed!

Mrs. Smith and family,
I am deeply saddened by the loss of Coach Smith, and my condolences to you and your family. Coach Smith was a great influence in my life and I will never forget him or the many lessons he taught my team mates and me when I played for him on the 1970 and 1971 Harrison High School Golden Goblin football teams. When Coach Smith arrived at Harrison before the 1970 season many of us were shocked at the hard work and discipline he required from us to be a member of one of his teams. In fact, by the end of two a day practices in August 1970 there were less than 30 young men still on the Goblin roster, but that corps group of Coach Smith's players went on to establish Goblin football as a professional and winning high school football program in Arkansas. He taught us about being a team player and that the team was a much more important factor in the game than individual performances. I'll never forget his crystal clear injunction against individual post touchdown celebrations, demonstrations and dances! Such actions denigrated the team efforts needed to enable the individual player to score, and consequently Coach Smith emphatically forbade such actions. These hard lessons he taught us about hard work, discipline and self-sacrifice for the group team effort are as important today as they were in 1970 and 1971, and perhaps they are even more important now. God bless him! I'll never forget him or the camaraderie of my teammates that he instilled into us. As my team mate mentioned earlier, Coach Smith (or "Wild Bill", as we affectionately nicknamed him!), remains a legend in Boone County.
Sincerely,
Lionell Owens

My deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of Coach Smith. In the 70's, at Harrison High School, I was proud to know him. He was a leader to many in his few years there but he set a legacy in our small town. So many of my classmates continue to talk about him to this day. We have coaches and teachers throughout our lives that make such an impact on our lives, and Coach Smith was one of those people. May God hold you all in his arms as you go through this difficult time.

To The Smith Family - So many of your extended family mourn the loss of a great Leader, Coach and Friend. Your Dad laid the foundation for the future success and determination for so many of us who we blessed to be a small part of his life..
When coach accepted the Head Football job at Harrison, I don't think any off us knew the positive impact he would have on our program, but especially on our lives..
He's a Legend in the Hills of Boone County.
Thank you Mrs. Patti and family for sharing him with us. I can honestly say we would have run thru a brick wall for the MAN.
I'm reminded of the line of a favorite song,
"I'm not really gone, just gone on before"..
God blessed Coach with a wonderful Family and it was obvious how proud he is off each of you. As Coach always said before each game, "Each in his own way"...
Continued Blessings on his family...
Sincerely.

Mrs. Smith and family, I am sorry for your loss , but proud for Coach Smith, we know that he has received his ultimate reward. We all have such fond memories of coach Smith here in Harrison. Any time me and any of the football class of 1972 -73,get together we always end up talking about football and Coach Smith. We all have great Coach Smith stories. I have always thought the world of Coach Smith. He was such a big influence in my life. One of my fondest memories is , I was the Quarterback and Coach Smith always called me Goose, so Coach Smith would send the play in and I would get up to the line of scrimmage and I would hear Coach Smith yell out Goose , meaning he wanted me keep the ball my self. i think when Dirk was a senior at Wynne , they played Harrison in the playoffs at Harrison. I stood on the sidelines and talked to Coach Smith the entire game. I loved every second of that. Thanks for everything Coach Smith and Family , I love you all.

My family thought Coach Smith was the best. We have & will continue to appreciate all he gave not only to Josh & Jake, but all the young men he coached. Coach was a great teacher and motivator. He knew how to get every kid to not only believe in what he was teaching, but to believe in self. He could get more out of his players than they thought they possessed. Thanks Coach, rest in peace and may God bless your family.
