I just heard of Mr Roten's passing, and offer my prayers and deepest condolences to the family.
Though I haven't seen him in years, Baxter's life, Christian witness, and thoughtful demeanor made a lasting impression on my life. I remember well his ability to blend humor with the sternness necessary for school students (as myself) to be able to appreciate his care and still "get the message".
Baxter Roten was a man who stood greatly in his humility, he will be missed and fondly remembered.

I was saddened to hear of Baxter's passing. He was a fine man and an inspiration to many. Always striving to do the right thing and be fair to everybody, not to mention his ability to sing.

I know he will be missed and my prayers are with the family. God bless each and all.

"Many successful people attended small schools in low-income communities but were fortunate to come under the influence of a gifted teacher. An unheralded small school, an ''ordinary'' citizen, a teacher, a coach, a boss -- role models come in all sizes, ages, denominations and incomes, and frequently out of the blue." (JERRY FRANKEL)

I will add, for me, Mr. Roten was a mentor and a great loss of a good man.

Baxter was one of my favorite teachers , we lived about a quarter of a mile down the road from him when i was a young kid . I remember going up to play with Susan and we were going to ride a pony she had, it was acting up and Baxter decided he was going to ride it and wear it down so we could ride it . The memory of him with those long legs wrapped around that pony while it bucked across the pasture , still tickles me to this day . ( it never did buck him off ) . He will be missed !

Paul you were my best friend as a child. You mom and dad and sister treated me like family. Then there was Baxter. He had a twinkle in his eye and loved everyone. He should have thrown the gang out that went visiting his wedding night but just grinned and waited for out shame. I will miss him.
