Jesse Wilmer HuffmanI am a Veteran.

February 7, 1933 - June 6, 2015

Jesse W. Huffman passed away June 6, 2015. He was born February 7, 1933 at Cleveland, Arkansas. He was the son of the late Henry and Annie (Scroggins) Huffman.
Jesse was an U.S. Army Nuclear Veteran, having served and participated in Operation Castle, a series of nuclear bomb tests carried out by Army, Navy, Air-Force, and the Atomic Energy Commission at Eniwetok Atoll in the Western Pacific Ocean. He was a Signal Corps cryptographer. He witnessed the largest explosion of any device that has been detonated by the United States. This was an eleven megaton bomb that exceeded the expected yield. It was believed to have been 18 megatons. This almost ended the series of tests. President Truman finally gave the okay to continue these tests. Five more nuclear bombs were tested in this operation.

Jesse returned home and entered college at Arkansas Tech, then later received his Master's of Education from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. After graduating, he began teaching school. During his career he was an elementary teacher, a coach, a principal and a superintendent. After 33 years he retired at Clinton, Arkansas, where he remained until his death. He was a member of the Clinton Church of Christ.

Jesse is survived by his son Scottie and his wife Amanda Huffman; grandsons Justin and his wife Chelsey Huffman and Conor Huffman; granddaughters Lacy and her husband Dave Robinson, Deja Huffman, Bailey Huffman, and Brittani Wohrman; great-granddaughters Hannah Robinson, Ashlyn Robinson, and Caroline Isabella "Izzy" Robinson; and great-grandsons Ross Huffman, Andy Wohrman, and his namesake Jesse Newt Huffman. Other survivors include: Two sisters Jerrell Boudra and Minnie Adams; brother in-law Robert and wife Doris Fornash; and a host of relatives and friends.

Mr. Huffman was my teacher and basketball coach at Wonderview School in the early 1960's. He was a wonderful example and great mentor for all of us. We knew he cared for us and we tried our best to please him. I truely believe we did.

From elementary school at Wonderview through the final year at Scotland the support and advice Mr Huffman provided was invaluable. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all. I only regret I am so far away and cannot be there to pay my final respect.

Sad to hear of Mr. Huffman passing away. He touched many young lives in such a positive way. I learned several valuable life lessons from Mr. Huffman during the years I was a student under his care. My thoughts and prayers to the family.

Mr. Huffman had a big impact on my life, and I'm quite sure I'm far from the only student who felt that way. I'm so happy I took the opportunity to tell him so, in person, on a few occasions the past couple of years. Mr. Huffman was a special teacher and a special human being.
