of Quitman, AR
October 16, 1925 - August 25, 2012
Faith Dorothy Varvil, 86, of Quitman, Arkansas died Saturday, August 25, 2012 in Fayetteville. She was born October 16, 1925 in Washta, Iowa, the daughter of Ray and Ellen Roberts. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Willis Eual Varvil and James Dasher and two sisters, Betty Samuelson and Mary Gum.
Faith lived most of her life in Quitman on the family cattle farm. She taught school at Solomon Grove, Quitman, West Side (Greers Ferry), Guy and Greenbrier. She obtained a Master's Degree in Education from the State College of Arkansas in 1969. Before retirement from education, Faith was a special education supervisor in the Pulaski County Special School District. She remained active for many years with Arkansas Retired Teacher's Association. She was a founding member of the Cleburne County Master Gardener's Program and was instrumental in landscaping the Quitman school campus. Faith's passions were to create beautiful things of glass, wood, ceramics, fabrics and paint; to travel, sometimes as far away as New Zealand and Europe; to create a naturalistic and quirky landscape around her home; and to bring people together for fun. She found something interesting to learn about and to enjoy in everyone she met.
Faith is survived by her daughter Nancy Varvil of Fayetteville; three sons, Phil Varvil and wife, Sue; Stuart Varvil and wife, Beth, all of Quitman and John Varvil and wife, Brenda, of Springdale; stepchildren Susan Spradlin, Tony Dasher, Terry Dasher, Johnny Dasher and Jerry Dasher; a sister Helen Carsten and husband, Merlyn; two brothers Bob Roberts and wife, Lavonne, and Bill Roberts and wife, Lolly. Faith is also survived by seven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren: Penny Condoll and children Towne and Tyne; Jason Varvil and children Braxton and Wyatt; Derek Varvil and children Grace and Leah; Amy Blanton and children Hunter, Kylie, Eden and Chase; Joshua Varvil, Drew Varvil and children Jaxon, Madilyn and Riley; Megan Murray; and dear friends, Diane Moore, and Carolyn Fowler.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, August 28, and the funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 29, both at the Quitman United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery after the service. Funeral is under the direction of Roller McNutt. To Faith's family - we loved your mom/grandmother. I was Faith's secretary for years at Pulaski County Special School District - it was a "Special" department to work in and everyone enjoyed each other. My favorite rememberance is the big fish fry at the farm, I still have two of her "fish trophies" on my wall. (Those were the ugliest fish I've ever seen!) Our prayers are with you..
I will always remember Faith as a kind and loving person. She was also a dear friend of my mother's. My brother, sister and I were in the youth group at Quitman United Methodist Church as teenagers with her sons and we often held Easter sunrise services in her yard. I remember Faith poking her husband Bill when he announced in church that the scheduled church meeting would have to be changed since the TV show "Bonanza" was on at the same time. I'm sure the angles are welcoming Faith with open arms. May God bless you.
She was a wonderful friend, and I have so many fond
memories of the past years, we had a lot of laughes .thru the years., I will miss her so much, but she is in a better place
now. Love to all of you. Nelda
I remember when Faith would come over with Jeanie Webb and the ladies to play cards and that was a blessing and I can see Grandma and Faith and their friends playing cards with Jesus today. I can't wait to see Faith again in Heaven
To Faith's Family: I wanted to let you know that I worked with Faith when I was a young girl of 18. We worked together at the Arkansas Juvenile Reception and Classification Center located near Benton. Faith was always such a loving and extremely talented woman. I admired her commitment to helping the youth and the wonderful artist that she was. After she left her job in Benton, I never came in contact with her until I moved from Benton to Greenbrier, then Damascus. It was so hard to believe that after all those years, we met each other again and I learned that she and my mother-in-law, Fern Duncan were long-time friends as well as church friends. I was able to visit her at her new home that Phil built and was amazed again at seeing all her artistic talent. I felt like Faith and I had come full circle. I will always remember Faith Varvil and how my life was changed by simply knowing her. God Bless each of you.
