Alice served on the Elders Board for the Chickamauga Nation Arkansas Band, she was very proud of her Chickamauga Indian heritage. As a young child she was always told by her parents about being Chickamauga and her mother spoke the language to the children and told to never tell anyone they were Indian for fear of losing their land and the children being taken from their parents. They lived with this fear up to the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and subsequent United States Supreme Court Decision legalizing marriages between Indiana and Whites.
