John Guy StrohakerI am a Veteran.

of Knoxville, AR

August 12, 1942 - September 18, 2015

Mr. John Guy Strohaker, of Knoxville, passed away on September 18, 2015, at his home after a long battle with lung cancer. He was born in Massillon, OH on August 12, 1942 the son of the late Harry and Letitia (Gray) Strohaker. John was much loved by his family and friends, a respected man by all who ever met him and to many, he was a hero. He was a very caring man with a great sense of humor. Mr. Strohaker was a Christian and a shining example of living the Golden Rule.
John Strohaker joined the Navy in June 1960 at the age of 17 ... just one week after graduating high school. After Boot Camp at Great Lakes, IL and Radar A school, his first tour of duty was aboard the USS Stribling (DD-867) homeported in Charleston, SC as a radarman. He attended Radar B school at Treasure Island, CA before being stationed aboard the USS Dyess (DD-880) out of Newport, RI. While aboard the Dyess, he rose to lead Petty Officer First Class in the Radar Gang and made an around the world tour in 1966 ... which included going up the Saigon River in Vietnam where he was exposed to Agent Orange. He learned that he could not make Chief Petty Officer for 6 years, so he applied to the Officer Candidate Program and was in the last class of Mustangs to complete that program. In March 1967, he was commissioned an Ensign and sent to his next duty station aboard the USS Halsey (DLG-23) homeported in San Diego, CA. He again made 2 trips to the Vietnamese Waters. After a six month school again in Newport, RI, he served aboard the USS Noa (DD-841) homeported at Mayport, FL. During his tours on these ships, he served in Operations and Engineering Offficer. His next tour was 3 years at Orlando Naval Training Base as Regimental Commander. During that time, he went to Rollins College at night to earn his BS degree. As a reward for his dedication and hard work, the Navy saw fit to send him, unaccompanied by his family, to Saudi Arabia for 16 months as their liaison officer to teach them how to handle and maintain the ships the US had sold to Saudi Arabia. He served as Executive Officer aboard the USS Voge (FF-1047) also homeported at Mayport, FL. At long last, he became Captain of the USS Exultant (MSO-441) which was instrumental in rescuing Cuban refugees from the Gulf of Mexico during the Mariel Operations. Also during this tour, the USS Exultant participated twice in Tampa, Florida's Gasparilla celebration ... taking his ship and 150 or so guests out into Tampa Bay to protect Tampa from the pirate ships that eventually overtook the city and flew the Skull and Crossbones Flag from the Court House. His sundown tour of duty was at Central Naval Education and Training Center in Pensacola. He started his Naval career as a seaman recruit and ended as a full Commander after 24 years of service to our great nation. John has always been a patriot. He took great pride in flying the American Flag from his front yard flag pole where every 4th of July, he put up a brand new flag as his gift to our nation.

Mr. Strohaker is survived by his wife Connie Springston Strohaker of 53 years; sons Guy Strohaker of Odessa, FL, Wayne and Laurie Strohaker of Brandon, FL, William Strohaker of Knoxville, AR; daughter Gabrielle and Harry Smith of Clarksville, AR; his brother Bill Strohaker of Altamonte Springs, FL; and sister Sherry and Harold Siegfried of Carson City, NV; sister-in-law Bonnie Springston DeNegre and Harry DeNegre of Dadeville, AL; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
John's memorial service will be 2:00-4:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at Roller-Cox Funeral Home Chapel
Interment will follow at a later date at Fort Smith National Cemetery.

I served with John from 1968-1970 aboard the USS Halsey. We were both officers in the Engineering Department. He was the role model for a professional naval officer and helped the adjustment to shipboard life for officers and enlisted alike. I am so sorry for his loss and wish the best for his wife and family.

I served with John Strohaker aboard the USS DYESS DD880 in '65 to'66. At the time he was a First Class Petty Officer (radarman). John was first class in every way. All the men, both under his leadership and shipmates whose duties brought them in a close working environment, admired and respected his devotion to duty and the fine example he set for his men. Thinking back these 50 odd years John would have been the one, I would have bet all my chips, who would rise to the highest levels of leadership in the US Navy. I'm very saddened to learn of his passing and extend my sincere condolences to John's family and loved ones. John P Miess ETR2

John and I both commanded minesweepers and were home-ported together in St Petersburg, Florida. We became good friends in spite of rarely being in port at the same time. His great smile and positive approach to every challenge made our infrequent meetings all the more enjoyable. Laughing and commiserating together were our salvation. He dearly loved his family. I had the good fortune to meet and spend time with Connie and Guy. John was an outstanding Naval Officer and a very good man. Rest In Peace My Friend.

John Strohaker was EXULTANT’s Captain and remains so with officers and crew. He was the leader rarely encountered and seldom privileged to serve under. He commanded with a charismatic blend of authority, passion, humility, fairness and understanding. He never asked for what he wouldn’t do himself and his first considerations always focused on the crew. He was an exceptional shiphandler and teacher. His consistency, honesty and directness were never compromised. People would state they would follow him anywhere...and mean it. He was the leader all looked to in a crisis. We will not see his like again and knowing him was a rare privilege.

Today is the day that we celebrate the life of the greatest man I've ever known. He was so strong, both physically and mentally. My Dad loved God , this country , and our family more than life itself. He especially loved my Mother and made it very apparent. He was a true gentlemen as well as one of the smartest men I know. He was loved and respected by all who knew him. He was a true leader who truly had a gentle spirit. Some may not have known how gentle he truly was, but, I knew. He was honest, loyal, ethical and honorable. He always strived to do the right thing. He was very passionate about what he believed in. I know he is at peace. I feel that in my heart. As much as I will miss him, that gives me comfort. He loved my husband as his own son. My mother's parents as his own. My Uncle Bill and brother Guy can not be here today due to health reasons. As well as my dear sister in law, Laurie, and her children and new granddaughter. I know today will be difficult for all who wanted to be here. Know in your hearts he loved you and truly understands. For me, I know my Dad loved me and was proud of me. I look forward to the day I see him again. I will cry today, but, I will truly celebrate his life! To a true patriot, thank you for all you did for our country as well as your family and friends!

Connie- So very sad, we've lost a dear friend, husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was an extraordinary man, and words cannot express how much he was thought of and how much he will be missed. I cannot tell you how much I really enjoyed my visits with you and John- was the highlight of my trips home to Arkansas. Anyhow, we cannot see John, but he is there with you as always. Take care, and may God receive John into his kingdom, Bless and Keep him, and make a special place for him. God Bless. Art and Bonnie

John was a great man. I was very proud to be related to him by marriage and friendship. He helped me often when I I was stationed in San Diego at the beginning of my Naval Service. The kindness and hospitality John and Connie is one of my fondest memories. When my Mother and Dad lived in Arkansas, John was there to lend a hand to help them as well. John was a good man, a leader, and a man that was an inspiration to me. I could see how much he loved Connie and his family. I am sad he his gone, but I am proud to have been his friend.
