Gladys Pope Newcomb, age 87, of Benton, formerly of North Little Rock, passed away Friday, December 16, 2016 with her family by her side. She was born July 17, 1929 in North Little Rock to the late William E. and Erva Mae Metz Pope.

She and her husband, George H. Newcomb, Sr., were the former owners and operators of George's Auto Service in North Little Rock. They married in 1947, the same year that she was crowned Arkansas State Rodeo Queen. At that time, she was presented a white horse, a saddle, and a bridle by the late T.H. Barton. In 1997, on the fiftieth anniversary of this award, she was honored at the Arkansas State Fair and Rodeo in Little Rock. She spent the last sixteen years working her booth at Blue Suede Shoes, as being one of the original renters when it opened in Benton.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, William E. Pope.

Survivors include her son, George H. Newcomb, Jr., and wife, Mary Louise of Benton; one grandson, Adam Newcomb and wife, Briana of Benton; one granddaughter, Katie Harper and husband, Chad of Prattsville; four great-grandchildren, Madalyn, Braylee, Roanee Kate, and Raynee Belle, and two sisters-in-law, Bess Pope of Alexander and Merle Newcomb of Benton.

A time of visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Monday, December 19, 2016 in the chapel of Roller-Ballard Funeral Home in Benton (501-315-4047).
