Betty Sue Fikes

of Benton, AR

April 23, 1928 - July 25, 2015

Betty Sue Fikes, age 87, of Benton went to be with the Lord July 25, 2015. She was born in Crossett, AR on April 23, 1928 to the late William and Eula Hightower. Betty attended Crossett High School and OBU. There she met the love of her life, Stuart Fikes. They shared 59 wonderful years together.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Harold Hightower, and husband, Stuart Fikes.

Betty is survived by sister Joann Knight (Don), of Little Rock and many special nieces and nephews.

Left to carry on her legacy are her children Mike Fikes (Susan), Connie Mitchell (Frank), Mark Fikes (Carol Ann), Corinne Thomas (Keith), Jennifer Crowson (Derek).

She influenced greatly and loved dearly her 13 grandchildren Shane Fikes, Trey Mitchell, Tina Rucker, Clark Mitchell, Brent Fikes, Julie Fite, Leslie Stephens, Lynsey Mitchell, Carolyn Moody, Rachel Woolbright, Jonathan Thomas, Sharlee Crowson, and Garrett Crowson, as well as 20 great grandchildren.

Along with family, there are many others who will miss her. One of Betty's greatest joys was encouraging others with special phone calls and notes.

Betty was a very faithful member of First Baptist Church of Benton for over 60 years. She was an active member of WMU and the Sunshine Circle, a 5th grade Sunday school director, and a Bible school leader. Later in life, she enjoyed the Senior Adult Choir for many years. One of her weekly highlights was attending The Ventures Sunday school class.

She was involved in the community as a charter member of the Tailsman Club of Benton. She is also the namesake of KFC's ''Mama B's Tea.''

The family would like to thank all of Betty's wonderful caregivers, who were her angels on earth.

Visitation will be Tuesday, July 28, 2015 from 6:00 8:00 pm at First Baptist Church - Selph Hall. Memorial services will be 11:30 am Wednesday, July 29 at First Baptist Church with Dr. Rick Grant officiating. Upon her request and to honor their Mama B, her six grandsons will be pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund or Missions.

Dear Connie and family, We are saddened to learn of the loss of your mother and Mama B. We have fond memories, especially of her visits to FBC, Arkadelphia when the Mitchell children were small. What a beautiful, radiant, sweet smile and wonderful laugh she had.. an amazing lady raising FIVE children and standing always the good woman behind the successful man as he opened more and more KFCs. Mrs Fikes inspired us all. Please know we are praying for you to find the Peace that only He can give. We love you !

Dear Family: I am Betty Sue's first cousin. My mother, Mary Ella Hightower Moss was Betty Sue's Aunt, being a sister to Herbert. There was quite an age difference between us, but I was privileged to visit with Betty Sue several times, and I was always impressed by her sweet, down-to-earth personality. Our busy lives kept us from seeing each other much, but know that I cared for her and will miss her.

i will always remember the big hearts mr. & mrs fikes had. i lived in benton until 1992 and left to try to start my life over. during the time that my wife was trying to get a heart and double lung transplant they mad financial donations to the transplant fund. they were leaders in benton for having canisters in there business to collect money. my wife had her transplant and did live a good quality life for about 18 months. so i'll always have a special place in my heart for both of them-may they rest in peace. i pray that our father in heaven will comfort all of you at this time and give you peace.

I don't really know how to say goodbye to my last aunt, the last of my childhood protectors. She was one of the constants of our whole family. She loved us all, but never anyone more than her sweetheart, Uncle Stuart. She always looked at him like she had just fallen in love. I will remember so many good times with her. I'll remember her laugh always, always.
