Dr. John Burton Mayes, Sr., 99, of Little Rock, died on January 17, 2017. He was born June 16, 1917 in Brooklyn, New York to, Harry Welday and Elizabeth
Gertrude Lamb Mayes. He was preceded in death by his parents; wives, Elsie Jane Mayes and Cora Mayes; sisters, Ruth Finzer and Helen McEvoy. Dr. Mayes is survived by sons, John B., Jr. (Jan) of Little Rock, Frank (Anne) of Melbourne, Fl., and Richard (Ann) Mayes of Long Island, NY; grandchildren, Chris, Wendy, Danielle, Tommy and Travis Mayes; 5 great-grandchildren and sister, Janet Rohrer.
Burton served in the Army during WWII. After receiving his medical degree from Cornell University in Obstetrics and Gynecology, he practiced medicine in Brooklyn, New York, for over 35 years. He was an avid golfer in New York and played in the first Monk Wade Father and Son golf tournament in Arkansas with his son John. For many years he would return to Arkansas to play with his son and grandson, Chris. In his later years he moved to Little Rock to be close to family.
A private interment will be held at a later date in Brooklyn, NY.
